Attack of the Giant Worm!
An Incredible Tale from the Depths of the Jungle!

When I was about thirteen or fourteen, my Social Studies class reveived a visit from a Papua New Guinean man, who described to us the hardships of life before he relocate to New Zealand. He allowed us to ask questions, and me being me, semi-jokingly asked if he ever encountered any Papua New Guinea cryptids. The class giggled quietly, expecting him to say 'Whats a cryptid?' or somthing similar. To our suprise, however, he replied with a short but fascinating story of his encounter with a monster in the jungle depths...

It was during the late 70's, and the man was a teenager. He had been collecting fruit in the bush, when he came across a 'tunnel' in the ground, trailing on far off through the undergrowth. Curious, he followed it. After about an hour of following the tunnel, he found himself in a very thick area of vegetation. There was a rustling in the bushes, and began to get scared. He had wandered far off the beaten track.
Suddenly there was a crashing noise, and in fright he started to run back to where he had been picking fruit.
As he ran he noticed with horror that a second 'tunnel' was growing in the ground, following him. Slow, yes, but following him none the less.
Without warning the second tunnel exploded and from it erupted a behemoth creature that slithered back into the ground again almost immediatly, but was still enough to make the man collapse with shock. He was more terrified thn he had ever been before in his life.
Again the enormous animal emerged, this time moving slowly out of the ground towards the man. He estimated its length at almost 30feet, and could compare it closest to an earthworm, with a long fat body with no discernable limbs, head or tail, it was in almost every way identical to a worm, albeit a specimen of remarkable size. The vivid green flora that surronded the animal contrasted sharply with the almost black blue colour of the worm, and it appeared to be covered in large scales.
As the monster approached him, the man became paralyzed. He found himself unable to move or cry for help, though neither of these things would be very helpful, as he was so far from any other human being. The worm slowly moved closer and closer, until it was mere inches away from him.
It seemed to survey the man for a split second, as though it had never come across a human before now. Then plunged the front of its body into the mans chest, winding hima and sending him crashing into the dense undergrowth. Before he even had time to catch his breath it attacked again, sending him flying into a log. He was at this point too weak to stop the worms advances, and after 'surveying' him again, it reared up and spat a translucent slime at the man, though it was a poor aim and mostly struck the log. The slime had hit his arm, so the man tried desperately to pull it free, but to no avail. The goo was strong and had pinned him to the log.
Then, just as suddenly as it had appeared the animal returned to under the ground, and he saw the trail it made go directly past him, then away into the bush. Realising that it might be 'saving him for later' he forcefully tore his arm from the slime, a painful process.
He then trudged on through the jungle, but was only walking for ten minutes before he saw a local boy he knew well. The boy took him back to the town where his wounds were cleaned. That night he sat outside his house waiting for the worm to come back and reclaim him, and was seen by an elderly woman who asked why he was sitting out there in the cold dead of night. He told her his story and she gasped "Grotar!"
She explained to him that there was a very rare animal in the jungle called the grotar, which was once a common and very lethal predator, but were hunted to extinction long ago. The only ones that could possibly be left now would be very old ones.
The man thanked her and went back inside to sleep. He never saw or heard of the Grotar again.

Thank you, always love a friendly post! Really? What are the others? The only others I have heard of are of Minachoalaco, that Brazillian one and the Deathworm, the latter of which doesn't really count, as its only a metre in length. I googled Grotar, and found nothing worm or Papua New Guinea related sad.gif
Elite
do worms usually spit out something to stick prey down to save them for later?
this is just another reason why we should tear down the rainforest thumbsup.gif just kiddin

*Gasps* Elite! Shame on you! original.gif

As for your first question, are you aware of the Peripitus?
Yetihunter
It sounds like a slow motion variety of the movie "Tremors."

This seems like a sighting of Der Tatzelwurm.

Awhile ago,i can't remember when i heard it or who told it to me,but i heard about some huge(and strong apparently) australian earthworm that was so big it took 4 men to pull it out of the ground blink.gif The aborigines would hunt them for food whenever they came to the surface, like after it rained or sumthin.Supposed to be like 6 feet long. And I'm pretty sure it wasn't told as a myth or legend, whoever said it was stating it as a fact, like he had seen one and it was fairly common huh.gif

Some here in NZ have been recorded at a wooping 3 METRES! Still nothing compared to our New Guinean Grotar if it exists.
snuffypuffer
There was some sort of giant prehistoric millipede, which would be creepy and not something you'd like to run into alone in the jungle. Perhaps, they are still out there, somewhere.

Or maybe not. tongue.gif
Undeadskeptic
Or maybe they are... remembered in legend as Grotar!

Wow! That was a really cool story. The kind of thing the Crypto board needed tongue.gif

If it were me I would have asked the man if he had a scar from his chest wound, and if he did, to show it to the class.

Thank you! grin2.gif I actually considered not posting this story, out of fear it would be crushed by the huge army of Dragon threads, but I'm glad I did to get comments like that!

I should have yes, but the class, and teacher, just after that asked him about little details of the story, mostly the worms appearence etc. If he did have a still-visible wound I think he would have shown it without being asked though, which doesn't really strengthen the truth factor in this tale, but he seemed like an honest man, I mean he was talking to a class about how life in Papua New Guinea was, I think lying wouldn't be the best idea in such a situation. no.gif

From the description (covered in scales) this sound more like a worm snake than a worm, though none of these spew stickly saliva to trap their prey. There are carnivorous snails or slugs that trap prey in their slime though. Some slugs have a rough skin that can appear scaly.

I merely gave it the name worm because of its overall similarities in shape, but you are completely right about the slug/snail idea, it seems very comparable to the Grotar and the huge creature might just be a mutant, or new species of carnivorous snail or slug.

DC has posted several times in my threads about things which do not concern dragons. He mentioned Haasts Eagle in my NZ Pterosaur thread and contributed several interesting points to my Mosasaur topic and Burrunjor topic also.

The sad thing is that such behavior is even considered out of the ordinary for him.

I've taken my share of unpopular decisions, even to this day. The things I believe I take seriously and dearly. I'm able to write most my feelings, and regularly have published letters to editors, speak on radio programs, and bulletin boards. But if anything, I'm a little more firmly grounded than absolute belief in a most fantastic, nigh unbelievable creature.

Personally, I'm pleased to still extend remote possibility that a North American ape/hominid could exist. And I'm cautious about mentioning that in public, let alone mythic, intelligent reptiles ruling the earth.

I feel slightly embarrased whenever I post one of these stories I've heard, I would die of humiliation were I to claim, in public, that dragons exist.
