QUOTE (This American Life)
“After the Flood

Surprising stories from survivors in New Orleans. We give people who were in the storm more time than daily news coverage can to tell their stories and talk about what they're thinking. This leads to a number of ideas that haven't made it into the regular news coverage. Many incredible stories of first hand accounts”

http://www.thislife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?episode=296

The US Military marched into New Orleans, took all of the people’s weapons, and then forced them at gun point to stay in the city. How the hell can we call ourselves a free people when we treat 100, 000 US men woman and children like animals in a time of crises!? I have the right to protect myself, and so did the all of the people in New Orleans; but they were denied that right when they were not allowed to leave.

If they treat people like that in New Orleans be reassured that's how they will treat you.

I suspect it was a FEMA test. They wanted to see the dynamics of what would happen in such a situation where the population would either be forced to leave en mass while others would be herded into a stadium. Of course they did not cause the hurricane but it is likely they bombed the levy.

May I say that the link posted in the second post of this thread is full of so much hyperbole and BS that I can't take it seriously. Yes breaking levees and rushing water can be loud. Industrial buildngs and even homes are full of chemicals. And saying that the tsunami in southeast Asia was "fronted by radioactive chemicals"?...

Guns Taken:

People shot trying to cross only bridge that was working in the area:

QUOTE (http://understandingkatrina.ssrc.org/Kaufman/)
The two then described their attempts to leave New Orleans as it became increasingly clear that they were running out of food, water, and aid. Because of the damage to many highways and bridges, the only way out of the city was to cross a bridge that connects the mostly black city of New Orleans with the mostly white suburbs of Jefferson Parish, known as the “West Bank.” Their recollection is worth quoting at length:

The hotels turned us out and locked their doors, telling us that “officials” had told us to report to the convention center to wait for more buses. As we entered the center of the city, we finally encountered the National Guard. The guard members told us we wouldn’t be allowed into the Superdome, as the city’s primary shelter had descended into a humanitarian and health hellhole. They further told us that the city’s only other shelter—the convention center—was also descending into chaos and squalor, and that the police weren’t allowing anyone else in. Quite naturally, we asked, “If we can’t go to the only two shelters in the city, what was our alternative?” The guards told us that this was our problem—and no, they didn’t have extra water to give to us…The police commander came across the street to address our group. He told us he had a solution: we should walk to the Pontchartrain Expressway and cross the greater New Orleans Bridge to the south side of the Mississippi, where the police had buses lined up to take us out of the city…We organized ourselves, and the 200 of us set off for the bridge with great excitement and hope. As we marched past the convention center, many locals saw our determined and optimistic group, and asked where we were headed. We told them about the great news. Families immediately grabbed their few belongings, and quickly, our numbers doubled and then doubled again. Babies in strollers now joined us, as did people using crutches, elderly clasping walkers and other people in wheelchairs. We marched the two to three miles to the freeway and up the steep incline to the bridge…

As we approached the bridge, armed sheriffs formed a line across the foot of the bridge. Before we were close enough to speak, they began firing their weapons over our heads. This sent the crowd fleeing in various directions. As the crowd scattered and dissipated, a few of us inched forward and managed to engage some of the sheriffs in conversation. We told them of our conversation with the police commander and the commander’s assurances. The sheriffs informed us that there were no buses waiting. The commander had lied to us to get us to move. We questioned why we couldn’t cross the bridge anyway, especially as there was little traffic on the six-lane highway. They responded that the West Bank was not going to become New Orleans, and there would be no Superdomes in their city…All day long, we saw other families, individuals and groups make the same trip up the incline in an attempt to cross the bridge, only to be turned away—some chased away with gunfire, others simply told no, others verbally berated and humiliated. Thousands of New Orleaners were prevented and prohibited from self-evacuating the city on foot. (Bradshaw and Slonsky 2005

Not to totally blow this story out of the water, but I lived in New Orleans at the time and did NOT evacuate. Nobody took my guns, nobody asked if I had a gun as a mater of fact, Louisiana is an "open carry" state. Noone had to ask if I had a gun because I was wearing it on my hip in the open....which is perfectly legal in Louisiana. I walked by Govt Soldiers every day, FEMA employees, and all the other people who were there to help. The only question I was ever asked was if I needed anything. The Soldiers and FEMA employees were very helpful, respectful and well mannered...

OK, great - but that does not mean that the people in the NPR story are lying - or does it?

When I said, "treat 100, 000 US men woman and children like animals in a time of crises!?" A 100,000 is much to large of a number, so I recant and take cover from that one ph34r.gif , but regardless of my own mistaken words the evidence shows there were a lot of people forced to give up their guns and they could not leave.

Did you listen to the NPR story?

Look...those people are lieing...and why you ask would someone lie about such things? They view themselves as an oppressed minority and will take any chance they get to embarass the govt they feel is opressing them....also the opprotunity at a chance to sue and get rich crossed their minds.

I asked because I wanted your opinion; I wanted to know if and how you thought they were liars.

They could be trying to sue and make money because they are poor - yup, good point; but we could use the same argument for all of American history and the plight of the poor. In that way of looking at it, I would say you are wrong because we have seen through the eyes of history that government has been more “not fare and good” as compared to “selfish and cruel!” – Right?

It’s like you’re telling me without a doubt the US Government treated those people perfectly and without fault; and obviously this is not true. We know beyond a point of view that the people in New Orleans for days preceding Katrina where not attended to with haste and urgency. So why is it so hard to believe that some people were treated not well, but very badly? All of them can’t be liars, just as not all of them are telling the truth.

I do believe you Live Free or Die, and at the same time I see no reason why these other people are not also telling the truth; and just for the contrast, there are lots of reasons why you could be lying too.

Give me a break. The reports on gun confiscation are well documented. Yet, you have the balls to say they are all liars?? Please provided evidence to support your claim.

I did provide evidence...I was there, with a gun...noone ever asked for it. What more evidence do you want?

Well, its interesting that we have someone with a first hand account that they can share. However, just because that is what you experienced, doesn't mean thats what everyone else experienced as well.

What do you think of the news reports about gun confiscation?

I think the people who had their guns taken were doing something which caused them to be labled a "threat". Afterwards they complain about it in an attempt to "get back" at the people who took their guns.

just a theory...IDK

couple of news casts talking about forced evacuations and gun grabbing in the "wealthiest" and driest parts of New Orleans.

“Treat me with benign neglect, get out of my neighborhood, get out of my life, get out of my F’ “beep” city!”

Now that guy is on to the point; if people wanted to stay, why could they not stay, if they wanted to leave, why could they not leave? If people need help, help them; if not, step aside “Big Brother”!

Hey “Live Free or Die” did you try and leave or did you stay?

people are saying with global warming the oceans will rise 3 to 5 feet in the next 40 years, even if we stopped all carbon emission today.
so what is the point of rebuilding there, I seen the levee wall on TV and it did not look more then 4foot tall but the army core of engineers said it would with stand the worst storm in 100 years.
and people are still building on the water fronts all around the world. now global warming is a fraud or the governments want to have a world of hurt that will cost billions not to mention the loss of life.
