Full Version: Earth's Magnetic Field Shifts

I haven't seen a thread discussing shifts in the Earth's magnetic field. Earth's B field whorls and eddies and shifts with a frequency of approximately once every 250,000 years, and Earth is overdue for a flip. Any thoughts on this topic? Any experts in the field?

because it's not a "flip" like a light switch. It can take hundreds if not thousands of years to completely change. In the mean time there would be numerous magnetic poles that move around until they consolidate. There are signs that this may be "starting" but it's nothing to get excited about.

Nudge. Any more comments on Earth's Magnetic Field flipping (sometime in the next tens of millenia), or is this topic too esoteric?

Well, the pole has shifted in the Earth's past and we're still here (seems to me to say it all). However, as esoteric as the scientific analysis of the situation may be, there are those who hold a more *colorful* opinion as to what this 'pole shift' will bring us.

For example, take a look at this gentleman's web site. According to Mr. Geryl we're all soon to be 'toast' via a huge cataclysm:

This catastrophe will not only result in the massive destruction of life on earth, but also its continued existence, however incomprehensible this may sound. Let me explain this.
The magnetic field of the earth is not an accident of natural science. Its primary task is to protect us against cosmic and solar radiation. Without this field, life is practically impossible and in a short time, life on our planet would be extinguished. An all-burning, deadly radioactive radiation would torment the earth's surface.

So here we are talking about an incompatible duality: despite the fact that a huge amount of people, animals and plants will die, life will continue to exist, because the exhausted battery of the earth will be reloaded by the enormous solar storm. During thousands of years the magnetic field of the earth can therefore remain stable, protecting the flora and fauna against the damaging radiation. While doing this job, the inner battery of the earth will run out again and another cycle of destruction followed by creation and mutation will start anew.

And (ironically) the end is scheduled for 2012!

I do know that weak magnetic fields have been known to have biological consequences on the human body. Give me a little time and I will read my book by Dr. Michael Persinger and see exactly what these consequences are.

Man, 2012 keeps popping up!
About the poles flipping in the past. Yes, many, many times. But not since humans appeared on the planet. That's the interesting part. The Earth is long-overdue, and the magnetic fields have been unstable for the past two thousand years or so.

I started the thread to see whether anyone had any recent information about what's going on with the B field...

1d. Thread bumping: Do not "bump threads"; i.e. posting a short response to a thread such as "bump", for the sole purpose of returning that thread to the top of the thread index page.

FYI. I'm no mod, but maybe you're unaware of the rule.

Good catch! I didn't notice that one (comes from my only skimming beyond the first post...shame on me)

*Official mod mode* Please do not thread bump, if you have more information/further questions to add simply state the information and patiently wait for responses...thanks.
