Hi, first of all id like to start by saying why i feel the need to open this thread:

a few months ago, i went on a trip to Sumatra. we planned hikes ect every day for a couple of hours we would go on hikes and it was all fun, until near the end of the trip when i saw this Orange or golden hairded fairly small money thing that walked on 2 feet! i could go into more detail, but i dont need it to be identified

when we got back to camp (a small town, or what we liked to call village) i told people about it and they were all saying "oh you saw Orang Pendek" and then they tols me ALL about it.

I've heard of the Orang Pendek, it means small/short person in Indonesian. I once asked my Indonesian teacher about it and he told me it was an Indonesian cryptid (I supplied that word, he just called it an animal) that was 2 feet tall and had orange hair all over it. He also said it was most likely a legend. He also said it was like a monkey. Could you tell us what it was doing, how long you watched it and if any of the others on your hike saw it?

original.gif thanks for the reply!

thanks for the additional info, im always looking for more!

my whole group saw it, it was running around gathering sticks and eating these little flowers on the ground, we watched this for maybe 30 mins. he would run in the circle, snaping branches and twigs off trees then place them in the middle, then he would walk around and eat these little flowers on the gound, then he would go back to the stick gathering. but then we made a big mistake, we got closer and we did get really close. id say we got nearly 10 feet away.

i guess we should have stopped there because when we tried to get closer, it started making this loud howling and screeching noises then ran off!

some other things i noticed while watching was:

feet JUST like a humans
hands like a humans

i also noticed it would only eat a certain color of flower (sorry dont remember what color)

OK, it seems like it was just going about it's business when you found it. It must have been making a shelter or something like that, and feasting on the certain colour flower to apease it's hunger. You watched it for 30 minutes? And it only did what you said it did? Was it's pile of sticks big when it ran away?

Weird, maybe it was a type of cryptid, or maybe it was just a type of monkey, but the human hands and feet makes it a lot wierder and harder to beleive it's just a monkey!

Let me guess, you didn't have a camera?
Heartagram3200
You said it looked like a monkey, couldn't it of been a large Golden Lion Tamerin or something?
Blind Atrocity
Eh... ok. I'd go with monkey before I'd go with orange-pendek.
BigDaddy_GFS
Orang Pandek is often described as having coloring similar to an Orangutan, but is bipedal like a human. It is also somewhat smaller than an adult human, perhaps 3" tall. It seems likely that it does exist, but has eluded photographers as yet. Hopefully, one day soon, a Pandek will be snapped.
Otterclaw
So, you had a whole group of people on a hike and not one of them brought a camera?
HoaxenToxen
actually we didnt need cameras, people doing studies there ect had cameras set up all over the forest! (jungle, whatever you want to call it) so we just asked them "if you get any photos of animals you dont need, can we have some?" and they said yes. now, i know nobody will believe that but sadly its true.

the pile of sticks was getting fairly large, and the animal WAS NOT a money. i saw foot prints, ect there was lots of proof it wasnt a monkey

i have planned a trip, 200 ppeople will be going. it will be for 2 - 4 months. should be enough time.

also we are going back to the exact place we saw the OP.

but sadly this trip is not possible for a long time.

id be glad to answer any other questions
Razer
I don't know many people who go on trips without their camara, not matter how many cameras other people had set up in the forest. Traveling is a personal experience that most people like to document with their own camers.

Keoshin
Hmm... Orange Pendek... I've heard of it... it sounds too much like a monkey to me. I know I have posted threads on cryptids being real.. but this most likely just a misidentification of a known species acting in an unknown or out of the ordinary behavior.

I second that. It would be great to discover an unknown primate species but without any hard evidence, what Keoshin said is the most likely explanation.

from the photos of footprints of an alleged oran pendek that i have seen it had feet almost exactly like an orangutans
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england...ter/3734946.stm
i think it most likely orang pendek is closely related to the orangutan
and possibly smokes a pipe
ok i made that last part up but you never know

And the questions about anyone having a camera?
wolfknight
No Camera or camera phone. Sound fishy to me.I think you saw a monkey

I can't imagine going to another country and not taking a camera.

Wasn't there a TV show that did a special on the orang pendek and said they were going to leave the camera traps for 5 years. It was national geograpic or discovery channel I think. I wonder what became of that project?
snuffypuffer
Do you have any idea how many pictures you could have taken in 30 minutes? Nobody thought to pull out a camcorder? Nobody at all?
SquiggleVonNoodle
Even if the researchers were going to give you some photos, you would still carry a camera. Least I think most people would for the story that goes with the image, like "There was this HUGE spider on the cieling of the caravan", "This is the view from the window" etc, or in this case "I saw a possible cryptid running around picking up wood and eating flowers of a single colour.".

Besides, most people would still have carried a mobile phone and most mobiles have cameras in them now.

Rather telling the OP carries the handle beginning with H-O-A-X.

Even more so, do this experiment yourself: Get a group of people, go into the woods and try to get within 10 feet of ANY wild animal. I'd be willing to bet a turtle or porcupine would be the only (non-hibernating) animals you could get this close to.

Now, picture a somewhat intelligent animal that is apparently evasive (or we'd already have tons of documentation of it). Try to imagine a group of people watching this intelligent creature that wants to stay hidden for 30 minutes, then walking up to within 10 feet.

Sorry, but I call BS on either the story as a whole, or at the very least, the identity of your Orang.

I with everyone else regarding the camera deal.

It's pretty annoying when people don't have cameras, and people on holidays should always have cameras with them! And I don't know how you could watch something doing the same things over and over again for half an hour, and only start to approach it right at the end. Sure, Orang Pendek could exist, and most likely does (though it's probably just a chimpanzee or a subspecies of one).

Mistaken identity
Many locals say Orang Pendek's feet look like those of a seven-year-old child, evidenced by foot prints they have found while walking through the forest. However, another local animal, the Sun Bear, is a likely source of these sightings. Bears in general are known for having feet that look quite human-like, and the Sun Bear's would match those of a child fairly well. In addition, gibbons populate the forests in this area and are known to occasionally descend to the ground and walk for a few seconds at a time on two legs. Witnesses could possibly be seeing orangutans; however: 1) this species has long been thought to have died out in all but the northern regions of Sumatra and 2) witnesses almost never describe the animal as having orange fur.[3]

from the Wikipedia. I think that's more likely.

Anyway, I have a lot of friends in Sumatra, come Ramadhan, they're going home to Sumatra. I'll ask them to provide more infos. Anyway, which part of Sumatra did the OP exactly went? I'll need to know that. I might go for some small investigation.

snuffypuffer
Just remember to bring your damned camera with you, man. You might watch this guy wander around eating flowers for half an hour.

If you know for sure it wasnt a money, being an orang-pendek makes cents.
