"Ice age" is often used to mean a period of ice sheets in the northern and southern hemispheres; by this definition we are still in an ice age (because the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets still exist)
This is from Wikipedia. The reason our polar ice caps are melting is because they are supposed to be. The planet is heating up natually, we are doing very little at present to cause global warming. However, maybe in a few hundered years time we will have caused some major damage.
In the early '60's in the UK there were some severe winters (by UK standards) - there was talk of global cooling and we were headding for a new ice age.
Don't trust everything the media says about global warming, search for the evidence yourself
