As for the vampires of the world; in my opinion it is the same thing as those that feel they are werewolves. It is one thing to enjoy the stories of said creatures, but they are obviously fictional beings and based in folklore. It is something completely different to believe that they exist in the real world and moreover that a person has become one of these creatures.

Having fostered younger children I have seen many 4, 5, 6 year olds that emulate their favorite superhero...some kids tuck a bath towel into the neck of their pajamas and run around the house as if their were superman or batman; it is common and understandable as children of that age have a wonderful sense of imagination and a sheltered understanding of what is real and what is not. They are also slowly developing a personality and looking at the things that they find qualities that are admirable; believing that you are saving people, and stand for truth and justice is a good thing at such a young age.

That being said, I find it disconcerting to see people in their teens continuing the same emulation, and moreover emulating creatures that are less than positive in scope of personality and relationship to the rest of society. I'd personally rather see someone copying superman than a vampire that drinks blood and is painfully antisocial...

It is an odd segment of our culture that believes in such things and I really don't understand how people can be so gullible once they pass the age of 8 or 9...

the legend of vampires mostl ikey is in part combined with rabies sensativity to sun light would keep them out of the day light and a dry mouth mixed with massive mood swings of anger would probly be the reason for the thirst. think about it like this if umet someone who was stainyg inside during the day talking of being monstrously thirsty and attacking people and u had no idea of what rabies was.... not to mention blood sometimes oozes from the mouth after being dead for a short amount of time so if someone was dug up shortly after being burried and bllod was scene on there face it would farther lead to such thoughs of vampires.

man there are WAY to many vampire threads, maybe we should have one big offical vampire thread

because we have serious evidence for their existence right? because we find a lot of dead bodies who's blood have been drunk right? and its not like the traits of a vampire are impossible or anything, no, burning to death by the sun is common. I see it happen every day. And it is not like a human body can live on blood alone. It all makes perfect sense

and supposedly all cultures speak of some blooddrinking vampires. And that is why they must exist.

vampires dont exist, never existed and never will. There has never been evidence for the existence of these creatures. Only folklore in various culture where the traits are all very differently

not only because they are scientifically impossible. Why does it seem like only the goth kids believe in garbage like this?

a diet of blood for a body like a human is impossible.

Go test it yourself.

Of course vampires exist... or at least blood feeding organisms. They're not human obviously, but if we were to "humanise" certain animals then they could be called vampires, owing to the basic criteria which has to be met for something to be described as a vampire.

As such, female mozzies and midges that are about to produce eggs are vampires. Mites, ticks and fleas are vampires. Leeches are vampires. Vampire bats are vampires. There is even a species of finch (I think on the Galapogas islands) that feeds on blood; vampire!

Yes, vampires do exist. they're just not the ones you're thinking of wink2.gif

your knowledge is very limited. You obviously dont now anything about simple biology and DNA. i advice you to take a simple course and see why it is scientifically impossible for vampires to exist. Do some reading on the evolution of creatures. You will see why humans cannot fly.

it is pointless discussing with you. You know nothing about the facts of simple biology

read The Real Vampire. Natural History by paul barber

Paul Barber (1990) offers an explanation of the origin of the vampire, however, that is perhaps grounded in truth. It is his contention that village people may have first conceived their notions of the undead from the actions of the real and unembalmed dead. The body does not lie still after death. There are movements of the fluids within the body and involuntary contractions of muscles even though the heart is no longer beating and the lungs are no longer pumping. Other movements of the corpse can be caused by the processes of decomposition itself or the actions of microorganisms that result in shifting organs. These are natural occurrences to the forensic scientist that even now may cause those without such knowledge to wonder if the death has really been complete. Most frightening of all, there may have been premature burials of people in deep comas who, before the prevalence of embalming, awakened in the grave under the crushing weight of the earth. Later, if they are exhumed, these dead who were not quite dead may show signs of having moved in their graves. Other exhumations have given evidence of a lack of decomposition of bodies long buried. Even for people who can account for this by the conditions of soil and climate, this may have been taken as a sign of continuing existence. Villagers in places of rural Greece still dig up the remains of the dead and look for such evidence.
Perhaps observations such as these were an origin of stories of those who do not die. But would they have led to ideas that these unfortunate creatures were evil? Barber and others suggest another way in which history may help us to understand the nature of the vampire in the stories that come from the villages of Europe, There were periods in all of Europe when contagious death was epidemic. The terrified people did not have the knowledge that we use today to understand the causes of such plagues. They would have been more likely to see them, as they were taught , to be the result of sin and evil. Death, it is still sometimes thought, can come from death. The evil dead were perhaps even more to be feared when a corpse was observed and evidence of continuing life was present. This fear had a positive side. It provided the tormented people with explanations, even scapegoats, that could stir action in relief of anxiety. Rulers and the clergy may have fostered these beliefs to avoid blame and reaffirm their authority in the midst of chaos. In this time of fear, if the vampire could represent a hope of life, it was not by becoming the loathsome creature but by providing a tangible agent whose destruction might conquer death itself.
