Is it normal to feel physical pain during a dream? I have very lucid nightmares commonly, and sometimes the pain lingers for a few moments when I awake. Its not like I have any marks, bruises, or bleeding, but is feeling pain in dreams normal, or is it just in my mind?
Mia Camille
and the pain you feel is from something that happened in your dream? could you give an example?

These nightmares always begin with me in chains and a knife through my hand, followed by various torture involving knives and mainly a flog. I feel everything. When I wake up, sometimes my hand aches and I feel pressure on my neck (which is connect to the wall by a leash in my nightmare)

wow strange dreams i have no clue there my friend maybe someone else can help...

May I ask three other questions?

When you say that he pain persists on waking for a "few moments," do you mean for the few seconds it takes you to achieve full wakefulness?

Is the pain completely and promptly gone once you are fully awake?

When you say that these dreams are "lucid," do you mean that you are aware that you are dreaming while you are dreaming the nightmare, or do you mean that the dream is "vivid," in the sense that you feel pain as if the torture were really happening to you, or both?

from experience chains usually mean your holding yourself back.

torture implies guilt or self punishment [im not good enough]

as for the aching hand you may be clenching it and driving the fingernails into your skin. this may be the cause of other slice and slash pain.

flogs=knuckles

this is assuming you havent used chains and flogs before.

It can be demonic activity or it can just be psychosomatic. Either way there is negative energy at work and whether it is because of demonic oppression or just because you have an internal conflict that is manifesting itself through your dreams the only thing you can do is attempt to analyze yourself, your activities, your thoughts, and your emotions for the cause of it.

I am not an expert on this and so have no idea if feeling pain in dreams is normal. However I know that in the majority of my dreams I have not felt any pain, either physical or emotional no matter what the dream subject is. But there have been occasional dreams where I have felt overwhelming sadness and on one or two occasions where I have felt physical pain. One that immediatly springs to mind is of being chased by a giant bird and feeling its talons scratching me. These were not lucid dreams and I'm afraid I can't remember if the pain persisted when I woke up. So in my experience feeling pain is not common, but does happen.

That is a horrible nightmare....!

Maybe something from another life..?

I've felt a hot, stinging feeling when I was stabbed through the neck in a dream.

But I didn't feel anything when I was shot! dontgetit.gif

mass pain doesnt effect you immedeatly. too much info. its like a logjam the pain will gradually come into focus. then again that might just be how it works with aspergers.

mostly battlefield injuries. im perplexed by the ones that scarred my dream self.

Well do you feel these pains and then wake up or you feel them and continue to dream?

I am able to feel pain during dreams as well. If I fall over in a dream, it feels painful. If someone hurts me in a dream, I feel the pain as well. After I wake up I'm usually fine, however. I doubt it's anything harmful, though. Pain is just an electrical signal sent to the brain after all, so if you THINK you are supposed to feel pain or hurt (such as in a dream) that message could very well be sent to the brain and the body could respond to it. I believe there are chemicals released by the brain during sleep that numb sensations though (not positive on this), so normally I don't think people physically feel sensations experienced in dreams. If it's really concerning you, you should probably go to a doctor just to make sure everything is okay, but I really wouldn't worry about it too much if there are no physical signs of damage.

I have felt pain in my dreams before. I remember when I was younger, I had a dream about Alladin jumping across floating clams over a lava pit... and in the dream, one of the clams suddenly jumped up and bit me in the rear. I woke up immediately to a stinging sensation on my rump.

I've also fallen and run into things in my dreams, and also felt it fully.

I occasionally have the same issue with taste.

1. I'm not exactly sure, sometimes I still feel it up to 15 minutes after waking
2. If it remains when I awake, it eventually fades slowly until its gone
3. I'm not really sure if I'm aware that I'm dreaming during it. It usually hurts too much to think of anything

Feel them and continue to dream. Sometimes it wakes me, but usually I don't awaken mid-dream

Thank you for answering my questions, Knight.

No, although just about any kind of sensation might show up in a dream now and then, it is not normal to endure realistically felt torture in recurring dreams. Since the pain continues when you are awake, it is impossible to eliminate "dream incorporation" of some real injury you are receiving while asleep, maybe an orthopedic issue related to being prone... but maybe a lot of things.

I notice you're from Massachusetts, so presumably you have health insurance, according to the laws of that state. This is a sleep disorder, and you should have a professional evaluation. You should be covered for the expense.

Good luck with it.

They sound like classic nightmares or night terrors. Many times during nightmares or even bad dreams, we act it out. For example that knife thru your hand. During the event you may clinch your fist or perform a grabbing gesture so that when you wake, you hand hurts from your reactions, same for your neck. Dreams are symbolic of issues that bother us while awake, and surface symbolically at night. Seems to me, that you are feeling tied down, unable to free yourself from a bad situation in real life. Also the leash indicates being controlled by another and having the feeling of being unable to break away. You need to search your soul, your heart and relationships. It could be a job, a relationship, family etc. Once you resolve the issue the dreams will stop. Lastly before going to sleep, give yourself a self hypnotic suggestion stating over and over that you WONT have that dream..Eventually your mind will kick it to the curb. Good Luck..JN

Just last week, I had a bad stomach ache in a dream, I was almost dying in the dream when I suddenly woke up and pain lingered on for hour in my real life and an uncomfortable sensation lasted all day, almost like I had the pain for real, but I am 100% it was in the dream.

Don't know if above would come under physical pain or not tho santa.gif

I'm not an expert, but I wouldn't think it's normal! The only REMOTE feeling I've had closest to pain in a dream is:
1) Wanting to go to the toilet
2) Mourning when a family member died in my dream.
No physical pain though! But when I dreamt I wanted to go to the loo, I woke up and really did wanna go to the loo.
I wish you luck in solving why these nasty dreams are happening for you.. sounds more like a vicious nightmare.. glad I don't have those!

the pain you have when you wake up could be a result of you straining or tensing your neck in your dream.
i do this all the time and wake up not being able to move my neck much.
not sure about the actual pain in your dreams though, the only time i've had that was when i dreamt someone was burning my leg with a blowtorch and it turned out my leg was on the radiator next to my bed tongue.gif fkin hurt though ><

you could have a nueorological condition similar to my own. I have horrible night terrors that I cant awake from like normal nightmares and sometimes they can physically hurt so I suggest you talk to a doctor about it. I'll ask my mom what my condition is tomorrow morning (would ask now but its almost 3 AM).

I've also seemed to have felt pain in my dreams. And it's only on the teeth dreams, where my teeth is bleeding or doing something to cause it pain, and I feel it in my dreams. XP It hurts a lot. But when I wake up, I'll either feel a dull sensation where my teeth is, or no pain at all.

The other dreams I've had where technically I was supposed to feel physical pain, like when I fell from this tower like thing and fell flat on my cheek, and I was bleeding from my mouth, I didn't feel a thing. hmm.gif So I'm not sure how or why the brain seems to trigger pain-like sensations in certain dreams, and not others.

I have also had instances where I am dreaming of something so hectic and chaotic, with a lot of noise and just doesn't make any sense, and it will make me so nausous, that I feel sick when I wake up, and have to throw up. XP Not really the same thing as feeling pain, but all of this does seem to imply, at least to me, that dreams seem to either connect to us on a deeper level and/or are more significant to us than some people might give them credit for.

Anyways, I think there's probably a reason why you're having these dreams, and perhaps the pain is a way to make it more abundantly clear that it's something you need to find out and solve. It's almost like it's crying out for attention, or something. I hope you find out what it is. I wish I was really good in dream interpretation, but I always find myself either lost and clueless, or searching the dream dictionaries. wink2.gif Which aren't always reliable, since we're all different and can interpret things many different ways. tongue.gif

Happens to me sometimes as well. But I think its just the way we
sleep. Like if we toss or turn alot, and it may cause our backs to ache.
But who knows maybe the events that happen in dreams have something to
do with what we feel when we wake up.

Hm... I'm not sure that reason would account for my teeth hurting after my teeth dreams. wink2.gif Unless for some reason I like to gnaw on my bedpost or something while I'm sleeping. ;P

I think in some cases you are right, though. I remember having a dream where I had stepped in a puddle of lava (owie... XP), and upon waking up that same foot had fallen asleep, like being all numb, and it felt all tingly and weird. XP

I would like to believe though that sometimes dreams can be kind of real, like astrally, I mean, because I've had dreams where my Mother is hugging me, and when I wake up, it's like I can still feel her hugging me, as if her arms were really around me. It was just nice, and interesting that there are some things in dreams that seems like we can feel it. Maybe since our mind thinks it's real, it's sending signals to our body that react to it, instinctively, or something.

Perhaps your brain could be vividly remembering a feeling of pain you have once experienced in the past, and is simulating a feeling close to what it thinks you would feel if it were actually happening (what is happening to you in your dream that is).

For example, I've never been shot before (knock on wood @.@) but I've had dreams where I was shot. I felt the pain per-say when I was hit by the bullet, but the feeling was nothing more than what you would feel if you were to accidentally walk into the corner of a desk (something I do fairly often). Now I have had dreams where I've tripped or stubbed my toe while running or what have you....and it felt just like I tripped or stubbed my toe, but I think its because I've experienced that kind of "pain" before and its common level of pain to experience.

But I have no idea why such feelings would persist long after you've awaken, that may not be a good sign neurologically.
