but building inspectors had looked over the bridge recently, and no problems were seen. secondly, people did see the mothman fly away from the bridge just after it colapsed. and lasty, the bridge had been under this kind of stress before and one of the the bridges suspension cables (the one that "broke") seemed to be chewed apart.
I'm not too sure what those sources are, but they are incorrect. The cause for the disaster was actually discussed in detail in Gray Barker's book on the tragedy called
'The Silver Bridge'. It was built in 1928, and despite not being designed to carry the load it did on the night in question, further investigation found that one of the I-Bar support structures was cast incorrectly. The stress over the next 41 years of use caused what was called
Stress Corrosion Cracking.
When it was built, the average car weighed only 1,500lb, by 1969 the average family car weighed over 4,000lb. On December 15 1969 the bridge was bumper to bumper.
Secondly, as you may have read above, the suspension cables were not the cause of the disaster. So your source is completely wrong, and I might hazard a guess at saying has never read any of the original source material of either
The Mothman prophecies or
The Sivler Bridge (both of which written only a few years after the disaster).
Lastly, there were no reports made of Mothman on the bridge by either the survivors or any of the hundreds of by standers. I would suggest that where ever you got your source material from was simply using that as a way to perpetuate the urban legend.
I am a firm believer in the bizzareness that occured in Point Pleasant from 1968 - 1969...however no evidence what so ever exists to suggest that the Mothman had anything to do with the disaster.
