Well since that guy didn't get in any trouble for this (which i see as being a big fire hazzard) I say we all start lighting flares and sending them into the sky.

I still want to try the black trash bag thing. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Not using candles, but the Sun's energy to cause it to heat and rise; it looks a lot like a cigar shaped object when in flight.

How many balloons do you think it would take to lift a road flare?

I don't know, probably a great deal. I've seen people make some pretty sweet hot air balloons, though.

I saw Mr. Wizard do that on TV back in the day. It was totally awesome. I always wanted to try it myself, until one day a few years ago we had a day with some weird weather. Lots of unexpected updrafts and whatnot. I happened to be at an airport where some work was being done on a utility building. There were a couple *bad* dust devils. They were actually kind of scary. But anyway if you've ever seen those big plastic bags that rolls of insulation come in, you know how big they are. Six feet long by three or four feet in diameter, which is a big plastic bag. Anyway, the guys doing the work on the building lost one of these, the wind caught it and blew it up, and it took off straight up into the air in one of these freak updrafts. Within seconds it was thousands of feet up. Eventually it just went out of sight. It was really alarming just how fast it went.

when i was younger we used to make our own "hot air ballons" using garbage bags, wire and firelighters. What you would do is thread the wire through the open end of the garbage bags so you have a circle, the get a seperate piece of wire and a firelighter. Gently thread the firelighter onto the wire, dont snap it then attach the wire with the fire lighter to the wire on the bag, get someone to hold the bag up and light the firelighter. the bag will fill with hot air then you can let it go..... It gets pretty high too LOL

Ah man.... People have to stop ****ing about with hoaxes because some people will see it and think i's real and when that happens you probably won't be able to tell them that it was actually a hoax and "I did it". They will rationalise some explaination to how you were some how coaxed into making this up to cover up a real ufo and thus you have two opposing opinions. So we should all stop messing with fake UFO's and then we can see the real ones.

It's really not right to do things like that intentionally, just to see how many people you can fool.

I want him to do it since I live near him, and I want to see if I (and everybody else) can identify it for what it really is. I just want to know when to start looking.

Very dangerous. The flare would pop the balloon as it burned down, and you would be dropping hot death on unsuspecting homes. If several people in the same area did this there would probably be massive wildfires and various homes burnt to the ground.

We don't exactly live in a wildfire area. It's been raining for days.

Risk minimal.
