MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Police said a man received a bomb threat in the mail over a tip he left at a Murfreesboro steakhouse.
Steve Thornton works right across the street from Demos' restaurant and said he eats there often.

Last Monday he checked his mailbox and found a hand-written threatening letter that was riddled with foul language.

According to the police report, the letter states that if Thornton ever comes back to Demos' and leaves less than a 15 percent tip, someone would blow his house up.

Local police said this is the first time they've had a case like this.

"We do take all threats seriously and we consider this a serious threat, and we are looking into it," said Murfreesboro police spokesman Kyle Evans.

Demos' is working with police to identify the waiter who sent the threatening note.

The owner of the restaurant said not only does he plan to fire the waiter, but he plans to tell police his workers' schedules so authorities can arrest the offender at work.

I waitressed for years. I did not expect a tip, I hoped for one, that is why my customers had awesome service and an attentive waitress. You work for your tips. A customer is not obligated to tip you. I have been waited on by some of the crappiest waitresses and they expected a tip just because they brought you food. Treating someone with contempt is not going to get you a tip, or at least not much of one.

yeah I rarely ever give tips (not cause my dad gives them), but because i've seen alot of piss-poor service lately at all kinds of resturaunts. I guess they'll just hire anyone these days. Cause i'm tired of getting my menu and then being left there with no service of any kind. But sending a bomb threat for a couple of dollars is just plain stupid.

I know. That is a really drastic step, especially when they will find out who you are and you will be going to jail. Kind of silly over a couple of bucks.

I bartend and serve tables and I do expect a tip. Here in Texas, my pay checks are 0.00 so if I do not make tip money I do not make rent. I would also like to point out that we are not there serving you for fun. When you go out to a resturaunt you should at least tip. If the service was good, then you should at least tip 15%. I have regulars that tip me $2.00 and hang out for hours. I also have regulars that stay for an hour and leave me $30.00. I have never thought about sending the $2.00 tipper a bomb threat. Some people will even leave a penny on the table to be funny, or to try to be a jerk. I will chase someone out the door for doing that to me. Not tipping? I'll chase you out the door too and confront you. Don't go out to eat if you are not going to tip. You might get me as your server.

Well, like I said, I was a waitress for over 10 years. I did not expect a tip, and anyone who is a crappy server should not expect one. But, here in Canada, we get min wage, so the tips are supplimental. So, yeah, if I get a bowl of soup in my lap, which happened, I am NOT tipping. I get a rude waitress, I am NOT tipping. But, on the other hand, when I get good service, they get a great tip, why? To ensure that next time, they will know I am a good tipper and the service will be topnotch.

Well, maybe they didn't deserve more than 15% gratuity.

When I dine out I almost always leave a tip, but it really depends on the quality of service I get.
The only time I don't leave a tip is when the waiter keeps my change. (On their own accord.) That's one of my pet peeves.
Another pet peeve is when they ask if I want my change back, but then, I'd rather they ask than just keep my money and not say anything. I still tip them, but not as much as I would have intended.
Like I said, quality is key...

If you don't deserve a tip, you don't get one. That's how I do it. Someone in class was complaining the other day about how they always leave tips and they think everyone else should just because the person waited on you. I really disagree. It's their job to wait on you, and our job to tip them only if they do their job right and well. If a waiter forgets you are there, or you wait fifteen minutes just for them to come and ask what you'd like to drink -- especially if the restaurant is nearly empty -- then they really don't deserve a tip.

Tipping isn't the done thing in Australia, we get minimum wage and like glorybebe said anything else is supplemental. I worked for years in Hospitality, you get paid to do a job, if you dont do a good job what's the point of doing it? You're at work to do your job, not to be lazy, surly and sometimes just plain rude, do your job properly and you just might get a tip, if you do then it's great someone appreciates a job well done.
I just don't think that everyone deserves a tip just because they happened to be the one who served you, anyway's shouldn't the person who made the food get part of the tip, they deserve it a hell of a lot more than the person who just brings it to you. Just a thought.

This article has nothing to do with being a good or bad server. Lots of people are just rude and do not tip. I give people great service ALWAYS and get stiffed at least 1 time a night. Lots of nights you will have 2 or 3 tables stiff you on tips for no reason other than being cheap. Goto a buffet if you don't want to leave a tip.

If you're going to stay in the food service industry, you will have to accept that some people will stiff you. And you're right, it doesn't say anything about the kind of service, but, the majority of people don't see tipping as anything else as a 'gratuity'.

I've been brought up to be generous with tips, but then again I dislike eating in restaurants in general. The best waiting person I've ever seen was at my brothers wedding. That guy was amazing, if you were even thinking about refilling your drink he was already there with the pitcher.

I worked with a guy who made sure his pants were just loose enough for the little old ladies to give him their tips personally. It was really funny.

seems like a reasonable response to not getting tipped...the logical step up from a loogy in the food
