"MOBILE, Ala. -- Nine-year-old Mackenzie Lewis's favorite subject in school is reading. As she prepared to get her hair cut to donate as a wig for "Locks of Love," one could read her emotions like a book. She was nervous. Mackenzie hadn't cut her hair once since the start of the school year, but she's straight on losing her pony tail for the right reason. "I just thought that since all these kids don't have hair, I have so much it would be a good thing to give it to someone else who needs it more than I do," said Mackenzie Lewis.
"Everyday someone stops her and compliments her hair. So the idea that she wanted to give someone her hair, I just thought was fantastic," added her mom, Jennifer.
Besides, managing 10-extra inches of hair wasn't the easiest task. "It got caught on a lot of things during school and stuff. And I'm like - oh, it's stuck on something - now I have to get it off," said Lewis.
And get it off she did. Now "some kid’s gonna end up with my hair," Lewis explained.
Friday morning when Mackenzie returns to school at UMS Wright, she has no idea what her friends will think of her new hair style, but she's very excited. "It just feels good to me, giving all these people the hair of mine and maybe one day, I'll see some kids walking down the street with my hair."
Quite literally down the street at nearby E.R. Dickson Elementary, the student council organized an event to benefit "Locks of Love." It's called "Off with your Hair." First-grade teacher Amy Deas helped organize the event, "I had the idea to donate my hair after my grandmother died of cancer, and I wanted to do something in memory of her, so I started growing my hair out."
"I'm getting more slips in from students saying they're going to cut their hair. So we're anticipating maybe more [Friday] night and I've already received five ponytails that have been cut prior to today," added fourth-grade teacher Linda Carter.
From an elementary school, to the local hair salon, Mobile is sending Locks of Love... a whole lot of love.
The E.R. Dickson event "Off with your Hair" starts at 7:00 on Friday night. It occurs prior to PTA Movie Night on the school's soccer field behind the gym. "
