Simple question inspired by the 60’s tune Atlantis by Donavan! Who contributes the most to the needs and wellbeing of society and why?

1. The poet.
2. The preacher.
3. The politician.
4. The scientist.
5. The philosopher.
6. The musician

Thats a good one..

I'd say the scientist and the philosopher.

Although I think the politician has the greatest ability to contribute to the wellbeing of society, to many have other agendas.
Darkwind
That is a tough one Irish, they all contribute. For me I guess it is the scientist who is working to cure diseases like MS. We need all those kind of people in society to inspire and give us hope, solve problems, make us smile, and awaking our souls.

The philosopher.
He/she makes the others almost make sense...

6. The musician

Maybe list them within the importance you hold them by thumbsup.gif
Tiggs
The poet and the musician - both spread the messages needed to change society for the greater good. Without a mechanism for widespread delivery, any message is worthless.
Finsup22
I would say the poet and philosopher, they create the ideas the rest of the list run with.
Clovis
Fun fun Irish I love these type of threads!! The song mentions the magicians so I must add it in for my rankage.

1. The musician because I cannot imagine a world without music.
2. The preacher because God is good and God is great.
3. The magician because magic is pretty.
4. The poet because their words are beautiful and makes us see things in new and different ways.
5. The philosopher because they attempt to understand the world and humanity.
6. The scientist because they help make the world better but it would not be so bad if we all lived off the land.
7. The politician...ughh must this one come?
Nik Xues
i say philosopher
to ask the question.

the poet to right it down

the musician to spread it around
the preacher and scientist to answer it

the politician to implement the results.

but first the question must be asked.

They are all the same...Delivering a message they want to put forth....
Clovis
Yes, but which message do you want to hear or think is most important to you? Or as the way others have ranked them, much less selfish than me might I add, which message will help humanity the most?

None of them. In order for humanity to function as a whole there must be balance, and having one ranked over another isn't proving anything other than the imbalance of our world today. If everyone was simply content to be themselves and let others be who they want to be and believe what they want to believe, then we wouldn't need to rank which person is the most important to society. The people who are most important to society are the people who are themselves and live life to it's full potential.

1. The poet- Expresses his/her OWN feelings about the world around them through beautiful writings

2. The preacher- Expresses his/her OWN beliefs, yet tries to force others to believe them (I would rank this last for that reason)

3. The politician- Expresses his/her OWN ideas on how a country should be run

4. The scientist- Discovers the natural wonders of this world by their OWN means, not someone else's, and lets people understand the world around them.

5. The philosopher- Expresses his/her OWN beliefs on how the world works and why we are the way we are

6. The musician- Expresses his/her OWN feelings through the beauty of sound

None of these people are any "better" than the other or make society any "better" by themselves. In order to be a functioning species we need ALL of these people, not just one who is better than the rest, or at least this is how I feel, anyway.
Kismit
Same as Tiggs,
The Poet and the musician. They pass on the messages. Messages which help to stimulate and develop social empathy.

Just wanted to point out that that is not always the case. A preacher does not have to force nothing on no one. Some churches are ran rather well in this regard. At times though small groups where everyone has a turn to say a word or two might work even better but that is besides the point.

Anyway everyone is cheating. We are supposed to rank them. At least which is your favorite?

That's a double negative, just to let you know, and you just unwittingly said that yes, they do have to force people into their religions. I'm a grammar freak, sorry. And in ALL of my experiences with preachers, they preach the word of their God as THE final word on the matter. There's no "I think" or "I believe" or even "Possibly", it's always THIS is the way the world works and YOU HAVE TO believe in THIS. But that's just my experience.

My favorite? I would have to say.... the philosopher. They are always on the quest for knowledge, and usually end up being very wise, intelligent, and aware people. They think for themselves, no because other people tell them to think a certain way.

The politician.

A politician provides hope for a better future through campaign promises.

A politician provides a better understanding of the human condition by breaking those promises.

A politician provides peace of mind by doing good for the community.

A politician provides a better awareness of what is right and wrong by doing bad for the community

A politician provides a role model by obeying the law.

A politician provides a scapegoat for one's frustrations by breaking the law

A politician provides entertainment by getting caught in a sexual scandal.

And most importantly, a politician reminds us that we are all just human beings after all.

Tongue in cheek mode off.

The philopher is winning methinks.

As far as the last pastor I had he showed us in the Bible where one thing can be a sin for one person but not for another. That no one should change anything about them, follow any rule, unless the Spirit guides them. Also that not everyone has to believe in the Bible to go to heaven. He definitely does not fit your mold and he was a straight up Pentecostal tongue talking Acts 2:38 believing pastor. Ahh if only were more like him.

Left this one out first time. If we're talking Martin Luther King Jr. and Desmond Tutu, yeah they're a benefit, but they seem to be greatly outnumbered by hateful and greedy preachers of the Pat Robertson variety.

3. The politician.

QUOTE
4. The scientist.

They brought us medicine, showed us the corners of the universe and unravel the mysteries about life, but on the other hand also brought us the nuclear bomb which most likely will be our downfall. To be fair, if there were no politicians we probably wouldn't have nuclear weapons.

5. The philosopher.

I never really got the fascination with dedicated philosophers. Aren't we all philosophers in our own way? I'd rather listen to a smart stand up comic or satirist than a dedicated philosopher. It's just as thought provoking but with penis jokes thrown in.

1. The poet.
6. The musician

I'm suprised these two aren't condensed into 'the artist'. What is a songwriter but a poet who plays along to their poems? Moods and feelings can be conveyed through any artistic medium. I draw no real distinction between the different kinds of artists, although I have a greater understanding of some fields over others. I'd say they have the biggest real impact on our own personal wellbeing, which translates into wellbeing of the society.

I would have to say the Muician, He Gives his Love as a Gift to all who might listen.

An unconditional love of sorts, No condemnation, only a sharing of his spirit.

He inspires The others , In any way,

He did all his miracles through Faith in Father (GOD) Not man made doctoring., as all True miracles are Made Manifest.

His roll is a Son Of God, Brother to Man.

1. The musician. Music helps us dream & inspires us.
2. The poet. Makes us know how truly beautful words can be.

Politicians start off good but get courupted in the end. Most of the preaches I have met are power hungry & seems to do nothing but use that power in get people to thnk as they do.
Kerkido
I'm gonna choose:
1) The poet
I believe society already have the self-tools to build a better world.. If a poet is capable of organising words for the greatest rhyme or most meaningful poem you'd ever seen, then the poet is capable of coordinating people to work with each other.

2) The scientist! When words are exhausted through the poet, science is our backup that'll keep society grounded and realistic on issues! wink2.gif

My own choices; I’d say number 1. Would be the philosopher because he is the first to ask “why are we here and where are we going”? Then the entertainment begins as the preacher and the scientist begin to duke it out over who is responsible for this mess. The theme song for the fight is a collaboration between the poet and the musician.
The fight is evenly matched and the blows are fast and furious as the music and song are about to reach their crescendo, the politician opens his mouth.
Suddenly there is a moment of enlightenment as they realize the true cause of the fight and toss the politician overboard. The scientist and preacher, battered and bruised crack open a case of beer and begin a sing along with the musician and poet while the philosopher reflects on the reasons to drink.
But the politician survives next to the boat as the sharks refuse to eat him out of professional courtesy!!
