Thursday night one local family is still grieving after losing 2 family members in 3 months. But couple that with a graveside mishap and the family says they're devastated.

Richard Whitman's grandson died in January. Just this week, he buried his life partner, Shirley Whitman. But, it's what happened at the funeral that has the family so upset.

"It was very upsetting. I'll never forget it," Richard said.

Richard Whitman is finally able to grieve Thursday. He says he couldn't earlier this week at his Shirley's funeral at the Ammon Cemetery.

He says when the funeral procession rode into the cemetery to bury Shirley, he realized in the final moments the grave was not in the right spot.

"Devastating and really embarrassed. All my family couldn't believe it. Everybody was hollering and screaming what's this and what's that," Whitman tearfully explained.

Shirley's grave was dug more than 20 yards from her original plot.

"I want my family together. I don't want to be buried here, wife down there, boy over here. That's what cemeteries are -- you buy your plots and put your family together. Not for somebody else to be put there," Whitman said.

After an hour, the cemetery employees dug a new grave -- this time in the right spot.

"You go back out there and it's not the same. You say a prayer on a piece of ground, and it's not the same," Richard's Sister Mary Colvin said.

In a phone conversation, the owner of the cemetery told Local News 8 it was just a mistake and they'll do their best to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The Whitmans say everything has been resolved at the cemetery. They and their grandson will all be in the original plots they purchased. "

Good question, in my opinion.

I find the concept of burying someone in a huge lot of dead bodies and then going to visit the lot to be close to or remember that person really, really warped in a way. I know it is 'normal' in this society, but I just think it is totally weird. Saving ashes from a cremated person is even weirder.

I think I will leave a page-long list of meticulous little things that 'must' be done with my deceased body like, "buried with my feet facing to the Northeast." and "Arrange leaves of the eucalyptus tree in my coffin." etc etc..

Then at the beginning of the next page write "Kidding, just torch my ass." w00t.gif

Gotta leave em with a little comic relief, you know?
