Ooooh, Queen Mary the 1st, driven mad by the loss of her children, driving others children mad centuries later. One older version says to verse the line "bloody mary" thirteen times at midnight to talk to a deceased person until 12:01.

Or drink plenty of Bloody Mary's and howl at the moon ... that is an old hillbilly legend as the moon becomes red signifying the blood of your enemy running down their face.

I don't believe its true. .. but it does nothing to quiet my fear of mirrors. . .*shivers*
When I was in dance, one competition we did was held at this really old creepy school and we (well me, I was a very crafty 12 year old) picked a lock into an old shut off bathroom and about thirty of us piled in and did it. Someone started screaming when we were done and we all ran out screaming like crazy people. laugh.gif
Then, I'm not even going to mention the awful things my brother used to do to me when I was little involving the bloody mary stories. Mirrors are not my friends.
Camozotz
Its just a legend. Theres no reason to freak out about mirrors. The history behind it mightve happened, but its not like she comes into your mirror.

No, Mrs. Claus doesn't let Santa hang out with Mary. That's how she got her nickname, didn't you know? Mrs. Claus beat her to a bloody pulp and the name just stuck...

Okay the "Bloody Mary" legend is not true.
Queen Mary Tudor (Called "Bloody Mary" due to the fact she had over 284 people executed during her reign).

Mary had NO children. Yes, she did want children. She wanted them so bad actually, she had 2 phantom pregnancies. But no REAL ones.

Is this Mary Queen of Scotts (wife of William of Orange)? If so, they named my Law School after her: College of William & Mary.
But Bloody Mary did execute hundreds. This was during the time of the Protestant Reformation. Mary was a Protestant (following Henry VIII and Elizabeth I) and Mary outlawed Catholicism in England. The carnage was immense. Then, of course, England entered full-blown civil war with Cromwell leading the Puritan/Protestants against the Catholics. That's when the real carnage began.

1st Edit: WHOOPS! Mary was Catholic killing Protestants. My mistake! -What a big difference? Christians killing Christians in the name of god, king, and country!

2nd Edit: She came before Elizabeth I. Mary had tried to restore Catholicism after Henry VIII and Edward VI. And she was not married to William of Orange. That couple arrived one hundred years later: 1689...

Anyway, sorry for the confusion. Let's get on with the thread.

The website below gives you all the info on the origins of this urban legend:

http://www.snopes.com/horrors/ghosts/bloodymary.asp

In folklore and children's street culture, "Bloody Mary" is a game in which a ghost of the same name (or sometimes other names, such as "Mary Worth") is said to appear in a mirror when summoned. One of the more common ways participants attempt to make her appear is to stand before a mirror in the dark (most commonly in a bathroom) and repeat her name three times, though there are many variations. Some include chanting a hundred times, chanting at midnight, spinning around, rubbing one's eyes, running the water, or chanting her name thirteen times with a lit candle. Most of these are meant to disorient people. In some versions of the legend, the summoner must say, "Bloody Mary, I killed your son!" or "I killed your baby." In these variants, Bloody Mary is often believed to be the spirit of a mother (often a widow) who murdered her children, or a young mother whose baby was stolen from her, which made her go mad in grief and she eventually committed suicide. In stories where Mary is supposed to have been wrongly accused of killing her children, the querent might say "I believe in Mary Worth." This is similar to another game involving the summoning of the Bell Witch in a mirror at midnight. The game is often a test of courage, as it is said that if Bloody Mary is summoned, she would proceed to kill the summoner in an extremely violent way, such as ripping his or her face off, scratching his or her eyes out, driving the person insane or bringing the person into the mirror with her. Other variations say that the querent must not look directly at her, but at her image in the mirror; she will then reveal the querent's future, particularly concerning marriage and children.

Bloody Mary Worth is typically described as a child-murderer who lived in the locality where the legend has taken root years ago. There is often a specific local graveyard or tombstone that becomes attached to the legend.

On the other hand, various people have surmised that the lore about taunting Bloody Mary about her baby may relate her tenuously to folklore about Queen Mary I, known in history by the sobriquet "Bloody Mary". The queen's life was marked by a number of miscarriages or false pregnancies. Had Mary I successfully borne a child, this would have established a Roman Catholic succession and threatened the continuance of her religious persecutions after her death. Speculation exists that the miscarriages were deliberately induced. (This is note true) As a result, some retellings of the tale make Bloody Mary the queen driven to madness by the loss of her children. It is likely, however, that Queen Mary I provided only her nickname to the Bloody Mary of folklore. She is also confused in some tellings of the story with Mary Queen of Scots.

The appearance of a ghostly figure in the mirror could be explained quite easily for the more complex rituals, for example spinning around whilst summoning Bloody Mary in front of a mirror lit by candles. The combination of dizziness, rapid movement and flickering lighting could easily fool the eye into seeing someone, especially when the idea has already been implanted. The participant may think that they have seen a spirit, it is, however, most likely a trick of the eye brought upon by the combination of darkness and fear.

It's not true, surely. Things like that never are, it just sounds a bit ridicilous. Which is not to say people who believe it deserve to be ridiculed. Tolerance is always a good thing when interacting with fellow forum members original.gif

No, it's false. I've tried it once before. Eventhough I knew for sure there's nothing was going to happen, I couldn't help the 'what if' feeling. LOL I even tried the Biggie Small one after I saw it on an episode of Southpark. laugh.gif Nothing will happen.

I've always hated mirrors ever since i started watching 'A Haunting' on the Discovery Channel no.gif Of course there are also mirror scenes in any good ghost movie,so that added to my fear.Y'know, the typical turn the lights on and "AAAAAUUUUUURRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!" Oh lord i hate that so much!So even though i don't believe in the bloody mary legend,i still won't say her name in front of the mirror, cuz it scares me so bad crying.gif

I just tried it....It didn't work sad.gif No surprise there.

Somehow I find it difficult to believe that there's this monstrous Hag who hangs around in the astral, patiently (if not pleasantly) waiting for people to chant her name 3 three or 6 or twelve times in front of a mirror, just so she can scream "Boo!" at them..

You'd think that any self-respecting demoness would have better (that is, worse) things to do with her time.

Still, I'm with Sweetsalem in not entirely trusting mirrors. Who knows what might climb out of 'em?
DJK0320
my cousin tried it, she woke up next morning with scratches on her face, but i do nor believe it...

Bloody Mary, bloody Mary, bloody Mary.

There, I wrote her name 3 times. I wonder if she'll post now. unsure.gif

Dan89
I wonder how people can believe in that.
I mean, believing in Santa Claus when you're 6 is understandable, but Bloody Mary?
I don't call anyone who believe in it stupid, but in my opinion anyone with some common sense should know that a dead hag won't claw your face if you say her name in the mirror.
You'd think that police would have find out before. tongue.gif

Agreed entirely. Santa is more plausible than BM. How silly to place any wonder at all into Bloody Mary.

I'm not disagreeing, but enough strange phenomena have been associated with mirrors down the long centuries that REQUESTING evil spirits to erupt from them doesn't strike me as very sensible behavior.

Psychø_Strider
i thought that you were soppost to shant it 3 to 666 times ? lol.
The Maharaja
Isn,t it the name of a drink
Drayno
Guy's and Gals, even if it seems unreasonable, still respect their opinion. original.gif

@ The Maharaja, it is a drink. The ingredients are...

  • 1 1/2 oz vodka
  • 3 oz tomato juice
  • 1 dash lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 - 3 drops Tabasco® sauce
  • 1 lime wedge

I agree with OldTimeRadio, mirrors have been associated with evil spirits as they are looked upon as gateways to other realms. Most likely because that everything is backwards. I personally haven't done it, and I probably won't because I don't care much for it. Always keep your mind open , though. wink2.gif

You guys can all believe wat u want, but i personally belive in her. I've never had the courage to do it myself, even with a group of friends. But I've heard stories. One that really creeped me out was one that was told to me by one of my guy friends. He was at one of his friends' parties, and it was broad daylight, and one of the guys decided to try the bloody mary thing. So he went upstairs to the bathroom and shut the door. A minute later, they hear the sound of a scream and broken glass. They rush in the find the guy with fresh, bleeding cuts all over his arms, and there is no glass anywhere. No broken glass at all. It scared me half to death! crying.gif And if i ever do see mary, i'll probably have a heart attack! grin2.gif

I've never tried it either. Attempting to conjure up up any supernatural or paranormal entity in a darkened mirror isn't the brightest of pastimes.

And even if there is no specific demonic being named "Bloody Mary" or "Bloody Mary Worth" there may be other forces hanging around only too happy to impersonate the role.
