I know that there are a lot of people suffering with various genetic diseases, but I have a whole bunch of them, kinda makes me feel as if I should have been eliminated from the gene pool sad.gif

I'm not sure if anyone would like to share their diagnosises, but it would be very welcome. So here's what I got:

*Ehlers Danlos (elastic skin, slow healing, hypermobility and weak connective tissue)

*eczema (inflammation of skin)

*psoriasis (similar to above, also causes scaly patches that itch)

*Asberger Syndrom (high functioning autism, had it diagnosed as a kid, but I'm pretty normal now.)

So am I just extremly unlucky, or are there others out there with multiple genetic disorders?

Your skin conditions might arise from just one or two triplet codons (I'm not a geneticist, so I really couldn't say). But your conditions may also be linked to positive attributes. But, again, I don't know. Certainly, in some cultures, your condition might indicate "specialness" (i.e. supernatural power), and in other cultures they might have construed such physical traits as a curse.

But overall, what we call "genetic defects" is highly subjective. Depending on environment and at which time in history you live, these traits might offer either advantage or disadvantage. Suffice it to say, we do the best with what we have. And you seem to be doing pretty well - judging by your prose...
MissMelsWell
I do not have any genetic defects that affect me that I'm aware of. HOWEVER, I do carry a VERY destructive gene.

I am a Hemophilia A Carrier which is quite rare. Luckily, I am the last of the line, and I will not pass the gene on. I have one daughter, but she hs NOT a carrier (there was a 50/50 chance she would be) and I have no sons. I will not be having any more children, and no other women of child baring age in my family are carriers. I'm the last. My sister does not carry the gene, my mother and grandmother do/did, which is why I'm a carrier.

Hemophilia (as most people know) causes blood to be unable to clot properly; women carry the gene for hemophilia, but only men are bleeders. It's an X chromosome disease, hence the reason women don't get the disease (or almost never) but pass it down.

There is another type of Hemophila called type C that does cause women AND men to bleed (frequent nose bleeds, slow clotting, generally not deadly), but it's milder than the A type I carry, It's extremely rare as well, even more rare the the type A.

Now that I think about it.... since this is not my area of expertise, and I don't even know much about the disease I carry (other than I do carry, that was verified when I was 17) ... is it really a genetic defect? Or, is it officially a chromosomal defect? Hmmm... maybe someone could answer that.

I couldn't have put it better myself, the quality of your skin is far from the measure of a person.
Promethius
Epilepsy (but i don't think it's herediatry)

the only condition I inherited is extreme succeptability to embarrasment... (it's a terrible disease laugh.gif)

i have nuerofibromatosis.. for which i am doing genetic counselling for.. its taken nearly 3 years and they still cant locate where the gene goes all dodgey. its also lead me on to having scoliosis too. (and im not too sure on my warped sense of humor has anything to do with it either wink2.gif ). im now needing a hip replacement due to the nf1, but poop happens.. things could be a heck of a lot worse
im the only one in my immediate family (other than my dad) who has it.. weird thing is, one of my close friends also has it.. her mum also has it.. she is in a family of 5 like me.
it can come in varying degrees like any disorder, my friend is slightly worse than me, she doesnt have scoli, but she has suffered from epilepsy from it. and is a little slower (but still incredibly bright) than the average person.
i also suffer from eczma, but thats due to asthma, and the eczma isnt all that bad.. its the asthma that really gives me the heebie jeebies
mcfoogle
mcfoogle suffers from a terminal illness. he used to be raised in a special home. now he live on his own, thank the Lord.
people say he talk funny, but thats because of the way he raised. please don't misunderstand mcfoogle's situation.
he does't talk funny just to be funny. it is't funny.

I'm lucky.

Just the tame IDDM (insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus - not a genetic disease).

Oh, but I'm rather short. Does that count?
metaoblivia
I have EDS - Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Basically, I'm extremely hypermobile with flat feet and some nearsightedness thrown in. It's not the worst thing to have. I'm very flexible, which is a good conversation starter. The down side is that I sustain joint injuries easily, and I have to take good care of my body to prevent my joints from degenerating prematurely.

Did you know there is a close correlation to arthritis and psoriasis? I have developed arthritis in my knee due to an accident when I was in my teens, and now the psoriasis is starting up, mostly on my scalp. My father has ankylosing spondylitis, and though I don't have it, I am most likely a carrier, since he had it active in his body when I was conceived. I am so grateful I don't have it, it is a horrible disease. But, other than my asthma and my wheat allergy, I am pretty healthy, and I try not to dwell on what is wrong with me, but what is right.
