I am only speculating here, but I would guess an athiest would think that the majority of the contents on the site are pretty absurd, yet it rouses curiousity nontheless.

There is a reason why we are drawn here, some for proof, some for comfort (like me), and many other reasons.

I am curious as to whether the contents of this webite reinforce your athiesm, or perhaps open new doors to possibilities that may slide your belief in something more after life is over? What has your journey been like through your time coming of this site, or through the years in general?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

After awhile you just start coming here out of habit.

I don't come here to be swayed or reaffirmed in my beliefs. Its more about understanding why people believe in what they believe in(or don't believe in). Originally though it was for learning purposes but now I pretty much know what I want to know about aliens, zombies, ghosts, conspiracies, etc. Although as they say you learn something new everyday and at UM you learn two somethings a day.

Also we all don't hate on eachother all the time like on some other forumns I go to. I also have a thing for collecting stars and I don't have all the circly stars yet! That alone will keep me here for another ten years.

This December will mark three years as an atheist. I had registered here prior to this account, but forgot who I was. So I registered again hoping to see what interesting stuff the UM community had to offer. From June to September I was pretty satisfied, but in the following months, my disillusionment concerning religion and spirituality sparked a sort of revelation.

I partially owe this site to my atheism. I stop in every now and then to see what goes down, post ten or so times, then come back a few months later... But overwhelmingly I find the goings-on here quite silly, to be honest!

It doesn't stop me from being interested, but it does fuel my skepticism of... everything. Haha. Hope that made sense tongue.gif

I often wonder the opposite. how many religious persons have become atheist or agnostic ? logic is hard to ignore.

I'm an atheist purely because I see no compelling argument to be otherwise. If one were to arise, then I'd reconsider my position.

I actually first found this site while doing some personal research into the 9/11 conspiracy. I found it to be full of lots of interesting information, ideas and viewpoints that you just don't find anywhere else. Been here ever since.

It took you four years to figure out Rosie had it right? *shakes head* I'm starting to lose faith in ya tiggs, first you tell me you aren't psychic, now this?

I'm not an atheist, but I think someone can believe in ghosts and definetly cryptids without believing in a god. We aren't even sure what a 'ghost' is, after all. Even if it does turn out to be a dead person living on in another form, it does not prove an existence of a 'man in the sky'. So I see no problem.

Completely off-topic, but - I was interested in finding out the amount of information that the US Government were aware of prior to the 9/11 attacks. In my opinion, the debate on the collapse of the Towers is a distraction - even if controlled demolition was proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt - unless you can prove who did it, then you're still no closer to gaining any criminal convictions. The same goes for BumblePlane theorys and/or what the Pentagon was actually hit by. The easiest way to show Government complicity is to prove that they were aware of information about the attacks prior to the attack and did nothing to stop it.

And yes - my psychic powers suck tongue.gif

I am a skeptic of reality. Not what is truly real but what most people consider in the West consider is possible and what is not. There are many things out there that are unexplained and this is one of the go to sites to 'begin' any exploration into that.

I love love love ghost stories - so that is why I originally came here. I don't think there is very good evidence of them or similar phenomena existing but I like to read them anyways original.gif

But overall it has reinforced my atheism. Yet we have to have anecdotal evidence of things first before we study them. I don't think we know everything!

The reverse happened to me. I was pretty religious since childhood (and no adults ever took me to church as a child either). I just was a bonifide God person you could say. But it was my study of creationism versus evolution that opened me up to a whole different perspective. The christian explaination to me was pretty absurb and trite, with explainations that were generally answered as "well the Bible says such and such and that is all you need to worry about". It was these unfullfilled and overall weak answers that led me down a path that eventually found it's way into agnosticism. I still believe in God, but not the way the Bible says. I'm not exactly sure anymore what is the "real truth", but this site gives many possible answers and that is what I like. yes.gif

There is a consistency to athiesm that cannot be found in religion. The long succession of gods sprawling back through centuries, each being retired in favor of a new one, makes the belief in a god a matter of who is the god of the time. Now we have a new kid on the block god dating back 5,000 years and we say, "Now we've got it right." Each new god brings a new history and scenario and hope . . . but athiesm remains simple what it is.

Concerning the site . . . I was active here about a year ago but had to travel a lot and lost my 2,000-plus posts and I'm really P.O'd about it. Oh well, I'll simply start over unless there is some way to reclaim my prior activity.
