SALT LAKE CITY

Just the threat of a jolt stopped a man in his tracks. A Salt Lake City police officer couldn't catch up to a 32-year-old man until he yelled "taser, taser, taser".

Police said the suspect suddenly threw himself on the ground and surrendered Wednesday.

The pursuit began when curious detectives watching a house noticed the man coming from another house. His parole officer was working on an arrest warrant at the time.

Tasers use compressed nitrogen to fire two barbed darts that immobilize people with a 50,000 volt shock.

Now all the cops have to do is say the word, and they drop to the ground...

The police of america are taser happy, but rather safe than sorry. If you look from their side the people they work with are dangerous and unpredictable.

If immobilised the threat is far less if not zero. (Doubt anyone could wield a knife or gun after a tazer)

Wish South African police had some better tools to figth crime. But how do you fight thousands of AK47 toting criminals while the police only have 9mm pistols and hopefully a keflar jacket.?
Sporkling
Actually, taser is not the best weapon to imobilise. The suspect could be fast enough to block using, say, a garbarge lid, made of plastic, it will lessen the shock by a large amount. And 50k volts is no small number.

I bet if the cop yelled "stop or I'll shoot" the guy would have kept on running.

Blind Atrocity
Ick. Some of the taser videos I've seen just leave me disgusted. At least they didn't have to actually tase the guy.

A taster is not a non-lethal immobilization technique. It's just simply less lethal than a firearm. Maybe this man didn't want to be murdered like Robert Dziekanski and many others.

True, we have them banned in Australia because they can apparently cause heart attacks, and all the other things getting shocked with electricity can do to you. This guy was smart when he dropped.

Plus officers love tasing criminals over and over again that it appeared they were getting some joy out of it. tongue.gif jk

Somewhere, someplace, sometime, this sadly might be true. As far as I know, the vast majority of police are good people. But there'll always be one who's off his rocker.

Of course, Officers are human too.

Everyday stress of a police officer can push him to his limits.
