And to all the UM Mom's who are so special, I wish you all a happy, sunny, and wonderful "Mother's Day"...

lol! She's got a simple motto for me & my brothers Mademoiselle;
Don't call me i'll call you. (that way we don't aggravate her so much) lol! Prides herself on being independent & very self sufficient. Think it comes from growing up in the school of hard knocks, probably outlive me. She knows where we are if she needs us (only a phone call away).

Mom is pretty special. Youngest of six, she was born in January, 1925. I've photos of the soddie in which her family lived before she was born. The farm she grew up upon is less than a mile from the Colorado border, in Perkins county, Nebraska. An intelligent girl, her school advanced her a year. Mom skipped a grade and graduated at age 16. She achieved a teacher's degree from Kearney State.
During the war, civilian rationing caused many hardships on her family, as it did the entire nation. She once rode a bus from Grant to Omaha (400 miles), stayed with her sister, who somehow obtained the needed tire for their father's Ford. She rode back home on the bus with the tire in hand. Her sister's husband died over Belgium when his B-24 went down. While still in high school Mom worked a couple times in the North Platte (NE) Canteen. She states the military men took quite a shine to an attractive young Nebraska girl.
1945 found her teaching in Silver Creek, NE, where a young airman, furloughed from the war in Europe, spied her and asked a friend to introduce them. She did, a spark was kindled, and the three remained friends their entire lives. Mom broke an engagement with a suitor from her home town, and she soon married the man from SC.
She taught grade school many years, and continued as a substitute after retirement. She changed the grade she taught the year I entered her previous grade, so I didn't have her as a teacher. Yet, many personal acquaintances have told me, over the years, that "Mrs. Powers was their favorite teacher."
With her husband, she raised four fine children. On this Mother's Day, I offer a personal salute to the World's Best Mom!
Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms out there!
