Well if we think of it this way, a rumor usually starts out because of a fact. So we cannot think it so simple.
The fact is interpreted by humans, who are prone to error.
For instance.
Lets say you were the first person to consider wood on this planet. Nobody had seen it before, your discovery, and you are like all of us - learning. So you come up with a hypothesis as to what this strange object is comprised of. A sensible thing to do would be to look around you, see what elements exist, and maybe go from there.
It burns, takes a little encouragement, but it is there, just hard to bring out, so one could surmise the element of fire is tightly packed into this new thing.
It floats, fire needs air. Only sensible to assume air is another component.
One can draw oils from wood - a liquid substance, so it makes sense that some water makes up part of this substance
Earth? It seems to grow in earth, the soil grows poorer as more trees grow, so it must eat from the elements of soil. Soil must be part of it's basic makeup.
So if we mix together som soil, fire, water and air, we should have a piece of wood right?
So, observation would lead me to believe that wood is made from the 4 basic elements. I can even demonstrate why I think so. A microscope will offer quite a different analysis.
