Has there ever been experiments where scientist could build complex or partially complex organic molecules which could be used to build DNA using nothing more than the basic makeup of the human body Namely : oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon?
What would the implications be if we could build and design DNA in a lab from scratch?
[ The ultimate aim being to build a live mammel or human using anorganic materials]

There are lots of elements required in order to create an organism. Its not even enough to create a single bacteria.

There are lots of elements required in order to create an organism. Its not even enough to create a single bacteria.
The idea is to create a living organism in a test tube using anorganic materials. The above are just the basic elements needed.

There have been experiments in which genomes have been swapped between bacteria turning one species into another. THere have also been experiments in which a whole genome has been synthesized synthetically and transplanted in the same way. This year, the J. Craig Venter institute anticipates it will produce the first artificial (designed by them, not an exact copy of an existing one) genome and insert it into a bacteria, thus producing an artificial species.
There is little practical value to producing things like the cell membrane and internal cellular environment for modern genetic material; there are already cells out there that can be co-opted. If we were to produce life from scratch, as it were, it would have to be FAR simpler. Composed pretty much exclusively of RNA and oils, as we suspect early prebiotic replicators and then early cells were.

I wonder what that chimera would be like. Hope they do it on animals soon.

making life from scratch isnt a problem i say its time. how many sequences would we have to build before our first success.
so far heres my theory.
life needs
materials
energy
a mixing pot [enviroment]
i assume that the simplest life you can make is a virus.
after a few viruses have developed the mixing should cause a few to fuse [assimilation of dna is how viruses adapt]. the ultimate result of viral fusions should be a bacterium species.
from there every thing is just evolution. which is the battle for rescources.
