Greek girl, 9, finds out stomachache is really her twin
ASSOCIATED PRESS • May 15, 2008

ATHENS, Greece — A 9-year-old girl taken to a hospital with stomach pains was found to be carrying her embryonic twin, doctors in central Greece said today.

Doctors examined the girl and surgically removed a 2-inch-long growth they later discovered was an embryo.

“They could see on the right side that her belly was swollen, but they didn’t suspect that this tumor would hide an embryo,” said Iakovos Brouskelis, director of Larissa General Hospital.

The girl has made a full recovery, he said.

The embryo was a formed fetus with a head, hair and eyes but no brain or umbilical cord, said Dr. Andreas Markou, head of the pediatric department.

He said cases in which one twin absorbs the other in the womb occurs in one in every 500,000 live births.

Thanks for posting this Ripley and as odd as it seems, it does happen.
My mother upon entering menopause suddenly had a tumor appear behind her eye, pushing her eyeball out of socket.
Gross, I know. She was examined by several doc's all of whom thought she had a malignant brain tumor.
She went to Birmingham,AL to a Dr. there, who did surgery and removed the tumor. The biopsy showed that this tumor was made up of hair, bone and fetal tissue. In other words, her twin, that she had absorbed in utero and the hormonal changes in menopause somehow triggered growth. I would think that the hormonal changes in puberty would have triggered growth, but I'm not a doctor, so what do I know?
It certainly wasn't as advanced as this child's was, but it was there.

Scary and fascinating at the same time, Jennie 1. Within the Wiki link posted earlier is a reference to parasitic twins, and it's an amazing subject.

Parasitic twins

OMG. Thats freaky. I watched a doco once where a lady had a belly ache and they operated and found a calcified embrio. The size of a full 9 month term baby. It had grown and formed on the outerside of the womb. But......... It had developed teeth and hair. They did a cross section thingy on the embrio, twas trippy but interesting.

Fascinating and disgusting at the same time.

Jennie 1's story was amazing too. It's weird that hormonal changes triggered the growth of her mom's parasitic twin. I wonder if these parasitic twins are ever capable of life? It would be really creepy if one of them had a functioning brain.

Incredible story, Jennie1. I have honestly never heard of this before, which is so fascinating.
It does trouble me, though, that it had the capability of being a living, breathing human just like us yet didn't make it that far. sad.gif

Blind Atrocity
For a one out of every 500,000 birth ratio, there seems to be a lot of articles like this popping up lately. I feel sorry for those who are having to endure this. I would die of shock if something like this happened to me.

w00t.gif Very funny spooky!!!
We actually pick on mom about trying to eat us, since she ate her twin.
C'mon you gotta have a little humor in life. rofl.gif

Blind, you probably wouldn't die of shock, it probably wouldn't change you at all.
It's not like this was a twin that was capable of life at some point, this is skin and bone and tissue or a fetus not capable of living on it's own. I'm honestly surprised that more people haven't heard of it, but when you hear of someone having a benign tumor removed chances are.......... Now, think about that.

that was very strange.......................
