On sunday the 18th May I had a very interesting night to say the least, my mother called me at work and asked if I could drop a few things of to her when i finished. I finished work at 9pm so it was very dark by then, my mum lives about 10 - 15 mins away from me depending how fast i go lol but drop off the things i did, on my way home i decided to take a little used back road, something i never do becasue the road is dirt and not very motorbike friendly... but for some reason i decided to take it. I was actually enjoying my ride home at first, then the road started getting a bit dodgy so i took it easy, about 5mins into my trip my bike starting making a hell of a noise, i was like "great, i take this crappy little road, in the bloody dark, now my bike decides to have a heart attack" so i pull off the side of the road (the road wasnt very big, dont think you could have even swung a cat on it lol it was mostly used by farmers) and get off and start going over my bike, turns out it was just a stick stuck in my faring, so i pulled it out and went to get on my bike again when i heard a noise.... i looked around but saw nothing so i shrugged it off and got back on my bike. I was just about to start it when i heard a small yip, like the sound of a puppy, but it was pretty muffled... i was like "wtf?" so i turned the headlight on for a better view of my surroundingsi couldnt see a thing. I was getting pretty spooked now, there were no houses along this road anywhere, so it was strange for me to be hearing this. I put it down to an over active imagination and started my bike, then i heard a really loud yip, so i sat there for a few mins listening and wondering what i should do, then i heard like a sort of scraping sound, i was like "man just take off, take off and dont worry about it" but i couldn't..... i stopped my bike again and got off, i grabbed a metal bar i had with me sort of like a tyre iron and walked carefully to where i heard the sounds coming from. I walked about 10 meters then came across a large box, i stood there staring at it for a few mins, i was thinking to myself, "this is something out of a horror movie, im standing in the middle of no where, in the dark of night, with a bar in my hand about to poke a box..." and poke the box i did, then all hell broke loose in the box, whatever was in it was despratley trying to get loose and eat me..... i got a hell of a fright and went to turn to run but fell on my ass instead, so i was back peddling on all fours watching this box from hell. It stopped moving then. I was like " i am gonna get killed but i need to see whats in there...." i went back up to the box..... opened the lid and inside was a very scared, cold black great dane puppy.... i laughed and laughed at my stupidness lol but the next problm at hand was how the hell am i going to get this pup home? I did the only thing i could do.... i took off my leather jacket, wrapped the pup in it, got on my bike, held him close and drove home, i froze as i was only wearing a t shirt underneath my jacket lol but i got him home, checked him over, and he was fine although a bit cold and hungry, i have no idea how long he had been in that box or why as it seems he is a pure bred... not too sure yet though. But he is a fantastic puppy, I named him Vittorio after a vampire in a Anne rice novel. He is a bit thin, but a few weeks with me and he will be right as rain. And thats how i came across my new puppy! I travelled down a dirt road i never take, i thought my bike broke down, and i stopped right at the place the box was, which i thought was a box from hell that was going to swallow me whole, i fell on my ass, and found a puppy LMAO i can hardly believe things happened the way they did..... Just thought i would share my uncanny story with you all. Hope you enjoy it.

Wow so your going to keep it? Thats nice. Any pet experiences?
Asphodel
That's pretty funny. I'm glad Vittorio is doing well with you, lucky little dog. I can't stand when people dump animals. sad.gif
Belle.
Aren't you a sweetheart!

I picked up my favourite cat Jake in a similar way. Sometimes strays make the best companions wub.gif
MissMelsWell
I'm shocked that someone would dump a great dane puppy! My lord, how could anyone be that mean to one? They're so SWEET! I'm so very glad you found him! He's gonna eat ya out of house and home, but he'll be worth it. I've always loved Danes, but have been scared to own them because for as big and burly as they are, they're a delicate breed. And well, anything that can poo as big as my head has worried me too. LOL.

I'm glad you just happened to have found him. He'll probably be the best companion you've ever had.

I myself got a dog on the 17th, but from a breeder, she was being "rehomed" Although, mine is a Papillon--a snack for your dane.

I love his name and his wonderful story too!

he is about 2 - 3 weeks old s far as i can tell, i have made an appointment with the vet next week to get him checked over properly, get his shots and all

Wow, an amazing story and find...a great dane, I so want one of those.

Good luck with your new puppy and many many great years together. original.gif

That is one great story darkmoonbride. Lucky puppy that you happened, by chance, to travel this road and find him...Great Danes are unusually funny dogs. We had one and he was a trip. As he grew (and grew), we had to place his food and water bowls higher up so that he wouldn't choke on his food. They're big and clumsy but you gotta love them...What are the puppies colors.. Our's was a brindle, very beautiful. Good luck, enjoy him... original.gif

Well to think about it, scooby doo is a great dane.

We want pic's...... yes.gif
Blue Raven
Aww, that's so beautiful and you are very kind to have taken the puppy. Some people would have just left it there.

Sounds very small still, I am sure it still needs milk (not cow milk) you can get powdered milk from the Vet, Royal Cannin has a wonderfull puppy's milk substitute, I have used it for two of my dogs and they have grown big and strong and maybe a little fat original.gif

Anyway, good luck with your new friend and take good care. yes.gif

OMG. *gooey* Thats beautiful, I reckon the little fella will end up being good to ya. Protect you when he gets big and strong.
Dryed piggy ears are great for their teeth, their a little gross, but dogs luv em.
Tia
I'm sorry but I couldn't help but laugh when you fell on your butt. I'm glad the puppy was found by someone who will care for it.

Make sure you talk to your vet about the health issues Danes can have. They're very delicate health wise. It would almost better for him and you if he was something like a Dane/Lab mix (I had one, he was awesome! He had the lazy Dane disposition and the smarts of a lab) because he'd likely be stronger healthwise.

Talk to your vet specifically about hip displasia and more importantly, about Bloat. Danes are VERY suseptible to bloat, and you'll want to make sure that you take all the steps necessary to avoid that since it comes on without warning and often kills the dog. Dogs with deep chests like Danes are so sensitive to the condition.

Danes are one of my all time favorite breeds... They're rather oafish, loving, lazy, and mostly just delightful to be around.
gabolai
If he truelly is a great dane pure , then the breeder may have dropped him off because of some small thing that makes him non breed standard.
It is sad but a true thing that happens more than you know.
I know a guy who has a rhodiesian ridgback his ridge is not very prominant so he was abandoned.

He's lucky you found eachother.

See what happens when we take the road less traveled !! grin2.gif

ps -- just another bit of proof that everything happens for a reason as well !

Just remember to do yourself a big favor.

As he gets larger, put any and all loose items (lamps,figurines,vases...etc.) up high,or in glass cabinets.Great Danes are oafish and loveable...but they know not that their tails cause a lot of destruction when wagging.Too,don't get too close to the tail when it's wagging. It can feel like you're getting hit with a miniature whip. happy.gif

Pups you ain't kiddin'! My best girlfriend has 3 Danes... (yes, she is nuts! Certified!) I'm quite convinced Danes don't know their backend is part of them. I've been left with bruises from gleeful tail wagging... a whip? More like a 2x4 LOL!! All three of her dogs also have a common trait for a lot of Danes... they love handicapped people! People in wheelchairs are endlessly fascinating to them for some unexplained reason! It's not just my friend's dogs either, it a lot of folks I know who have experienced this quirk with theirs. They make for EXCELLENT therapy dogs because they are so sensitive and loving.

I hope your little dude is still doing well and eating heartily!! Best luck with him! Oh my friend also mentioned that while they are big huge dogs, they aren't really cold weather hearty--they chill easily. He'll likely need to be an indoor dog--which isn't much of a problem, Danes aren't known to be purposefully playful indoors, they're mostly lazy, and you'll just need to step over him a lot. LOL.

That is a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing it, it made my night. grin2.gif Really is amazing what with you taking that road, having bike trouble at just the right time. Wow.
I agree with the others who said pics please.

I have been reading up lots about great danes and find that they arent so different to other large dog breeds, i owned a deerhound x wolfhound at one stage and they arent so different to great danes. Unfortunatley though we had to get her put down, she developed lymphmatic (sp?) cancer and there was nothing the vets could do. I cried and cried for weeks. She was the most gentle and beautiful thing. But on a lighter note, little vittorio is doing well, hes very undernourished but is taking his formula very well, in a few weeks he will be right as rain. Yes i know about the bloat, it was the same for my wolfhound x, you cant feed them a high protein diet. although i will be working on the toilet training as well..... lol i made him a little doggie jacket out of some old woolen clothes i had, keeps him nice and warm now. ive noticed he has a small lump on his right hind leg, so ill get that checked out when i take him to the vets. Other than that hes doing great. At first my cat and him didnt see eye to eye lol but now they have gotten used to each other and my cat has even begun to clean him, its the cutest thing. Although he is scared of my snakes, which i guess is a good thing really, at least i know that he wont go near them to eat them or vice versa lol!

There are several breeds which have this tendency, and yes,Great Danes are one of them.True, they may be oafish and clumsy...but they are all heart. They are a bit on the curious side when it comes to the disabled/handicapped...but they do have an inate sense that those who are disabled/handicapped could always use some love. original.gif

Wow what a great story best of luck to you both. He is one lucky little guy if you did not go down that road who knows what would have happened to him. I hate people who do these things to animals why not take it to a shelter. Well seems like you were destine to take that road that night for a reason. Yes please send pictures. original.gif

Oh wow, someone just dumped the little guy like a piece of trash?! Insane.
It's great that you found him. I'm sure he's grateful that you found him! Looks like you two were meant to be together.
