Full Version: Is there any blue food ?
Unexplained Mysteries Discussion Forums > Other > General Off-Topic Discussion
Mademoiselle
I was looking at the content of my fridge .. evaluating freshness etc.. when i suddenly realized that there is no blue food in nature !

I mean clear skyblue .. baby blue if you like.

Nothing .. no veggies, no fruit , no meat , no leaves , ... nothing

Has anybody thought about that ? There is food that's red , green , yellow, brown, white , black , purple.....everything but light blue. Or any blue as a matter of fact .. not that i know of , anyway .

And please don't give me the blueberry answer .. thery are not really blue.

Is there any blue food ?

But aha there is also a reason we don't colour much of our food blue:

Food for Thought
While blue is one of the most popular colors it is one of the least appetizing. Blue food is rare in nature. Food researchers say that when humans searched for food, they learned to avoid toxic or spoiled objects, which were often blue, black, or purple. When food dyed blue is served to study subjects, they lose appetite.

Green, brown, and red are the most popular food colors. Red is often used in restaurant decorating schemes because it is an appetite stimulant.

I thought I was the only one who noticed this!

When I was dating my husband he was drinking a blue drink and tried to share it with me. disgust.gif I was like no way, it is the most disqusting thing in the world for me to eat or drink something so unnatural looking.

After all, I asked him, are there any blue foods in nature?

Now he won't eat or drink fake blue foods either, I guess the repulsion is contagious. rofl.gif

Uh, how 'bout blue cheese? lol

Great post Belle, thanks for the links. original.gif

According to the 2nd link, the color blue is a natural appetite suppressant, and it's been suggested that if you want to lose weight, put your food on a blue plate.
MissMelsWell
Some cheeses are blue, but there are also blue foods like oh... lots of blue ice creams! Blue candy and even blue alcoholic drinks, I've seen blue pasta too! But everyone else is right. By in large, the color blue is an appitite supressant and most manufacturers avoid it. Not too mention... ever woofed down some blue frosting? It turns your tongue and teef blue! LOL

(as for natural blue food.... look at blue potatoes... while they look purple raw, boil them and mash them and you'll have some pretty primary blue mashers! LOL)

It's true, there isn't much in the way of blue food. I remember reading an article years ago about this. Apparently, the colour blue is an appetite surpressant.

I'd be willing to be that if I looked in the fridge here at work I'd find blue food. Although, it probably didn't start out blue... or fuzzy for that matter. grin2.gif

There's more to it than that - according to Yumetai, there's a scientific explanation behind these sunglasses and the lenses are blue for a very good reason: the color blue acts to calm the brain's appetite center.

You don't get an awful lot of pink food either in nature - I wonder if it's because pink can mean something isn't cooked properly where meat is concerned, I wonder if it's a caveman throwback?

MissMelsWell
Oh there are lots of pink foods where I live! Salmon yummmmm, shrimp yummmm, grapefruit, and my personal favorite... GUAVA! There are LOTS more too! Pink foods are delicious!

I'm pretty sure humans must of eaten raw pink meat before discovering ways to easily make fire.
