Alex is a medical examiner, not a mortician. She resigned after her son was a suspect in a murder case. She decided that she needs to spend more time with the living. The morgue just didn't feel the same. Something like that. The ending of the episode was very corny.

It wouldn't surprise me if the shooter is his son. The little brat is pretty dense.
