I'm curious as to what information people may have on ghostly black dogs that hang around cemeteries. I am aware of Black Shuck, but does anyone have info directly related to cases involving cemeteries.

hmmm it sounds like it could be a hell hound. But with out sufficient information I am unable to determine what this entity is unless a proper description was provided.

I just glanced over some information I've found, and this thing.. Shuck or whatever sounds demonic in nature to me.
*forgot to add, it's like an omen of sorts. It's a warning for the one who see it.

I've never witnessed black dogs around cemeteries (unless you want to count our neighbor's mutt that came through the cemetery in our yard to steal our dog's ball for no apparent reason

), but I have elsewhere. I always felt that they're spiritual messengers, and have secrets to share with us. (: The few I've ever seen always left me feeling enlightened, but wary, and curious more than skeptical and afraid. Either way, I
love black dogs, and consume every moment when I get to see one. Of every spiritual phenomena, black dogs definitely have to be my favorite to experience.

I recall hearing of an old practice in Europe of the first person buried in a cemetery was buried alive so that his spirit would be left to protect the cemetery. I wonder how long this practice lasted.

That poor person. I wonder if it was voluntary or sacrificial.
On the other hand, that site posted earlier was useful. I, however, haven't had any sort of experience with a black dog -- not in a cemetery at least.

I tried finding reference to the ritual mentioned above, but didn't have any luck. Does anyone else have any info on it?

I thought black dog was a legend truck drivers tell all the time from being on the road for a long period of time? LOL

I've heard that thing about the black dog that truckers see after driving a long time. And it's true! I'm not a trucker, but when we went on our honeymoon, we had been up forever with all the "festivities" then immediately left for Charleston, SC for a short honeymoon. Not drinking any alcohol or anything, just tired. My husband got so tired, he said he saw the black dog and I needed to drive awhile. Well, I saw the durn black dog too and made him finish the drive!lol
It was just what is said, looked like a big black dog stretched out at a dead run along side the car just off the road. It was really eerie. Must be a trick of the brain when you're really tired cuz we both did see it. I'll never forget it.

Ok, apparently the idea is that burying someone alive turned them into a Ankou.

I've never heard of this tradition, but I have heard of people being buried with the appropriate tools to exume themselves, for one reason or another.
As for black dogs at a cemetery, I have indeed seen this. And recently. I was shooting some early morning fog shots in the cemetery. I kept thinking I wasn't alone (an obvious and rational deduction). Then I noticed something dart in the distance, low to the ground. I saw this again on the otherside of me. They were black labs, and they were keeping their distance where I couldn't see them clearly. I wanted to get a picture and I was armed, so I moved in the direction of one of them (or at least where I had seen it disappear into the fog). I hadn't advanced 10 feet when both dogs began barking viciously at me. I tucked my camera under my coat and I was out of there. I hit the gate and walked down the road to my truck with those dogs barking and snarling behind me somewhere. I did return under better conditions and noticed there was a large fence surrounding the area I hadn't noticed before. So the dogs could have been watch dogs or pets, I suppose. In any case, it was clear I was in danger had I stayed any longer. ~Jackal
