"The state has the duty to protect a child's fundamental rights against an irresponsible choice of names by parents," it ruled. The appeal was brought by a woman in the populous western state of North Rhine-Westphalia after a lower court's decision in 1998 to cut the number of names to five. The lower court had ruled that having a long chain of names would have "a significantly onerous effect" on the child. |

As if parents don't embarrass their kids enough throughout the years, it seems unfair to give them a head start from birth.
Why would somone be so cruel to their own child? Imagaine the teasing in Elementary School!
They'd have a job chanting his name though! It's a bit ridiculous to say the least

If I called my daughters Hotaru Malcolm, Ayame Malcolm or Marit Suzan Malcolm would they be too weird?
I mean, two are Japanese, one is German and I like them, but anyone think they would simply result in bullying?
I don't think government has any role at all in any of this. If she wanted to give the kid 50 names, she is only going to be known by a couple of them. It is stupid, but I don't think any government should have a say in it.

Ah but think of the work which would need to go into writting up the birth certificate, and what about offical forms which need all names including middle ones. And what if exams are included in those
kid would be finishig writting his name as the test ends... poor thing never stood a chance
