I wish to ask, why do people who like maths actually like studying it. Cause it seems such a strange thing to actually enjoy.

I ask myself the same question.

I'm very good at math (applied math), but I can't understand how some could find it enjoyable, because I don't.

Very simple, you can explain patterns with it that you could not by simple observation...for example.

You could argue why do people enjoy making money, each to his own i guess. imagine if einstein just wished he was a millionaire and joined in being a sheep i doubt i would not be typing this today. grin2.gif

Everyone has their own thing to enjoy sudying...

I used to really like mathmatics and was pretty good at it, until I had to take a calculus class. I always did well in geometry, algebra, trig...it made sense... I had to take calc and it was like I was in a different world, it just never clicked. I had to take the class twice to barely pass...it just didnt work for me for some reason...I loved the applications, and some of the math stuck with me and was easy, but some of it, just never made sense...

Some people like to be able to look at different problems and solve them; they are like riddles or puzzles...

I have a friend who was an accounting major in college, he absolutely loves to go through huge corporations books to find missing money, stolen money...that kind of stuff. For him it is like being a private eye, he gets to solve a crime. To me it is a mind numbing series of numbers that are incomprehensible...

Of course I like to study medical things, stuff that would make most people lose their lunch...

I think it would suck if we all liked the same thing.

I used to be good at Maths. In my Higher School Certificate I placed in the top-100 in my State for Maths (bit of boasting). But I never enjoyed it. To me, it always seemed that there was only one correct answer, and only one path that could be used to achieve that answer. Being in Music and Drama I always enjoyed the fact that I could write a paper and argue completely opposite to someone else, contradict them in every way possible and still both of us get good marks. The open-endedness of the Creative subjects was where my passion truly lies.

As an aside, despite the HSC results in maths, having not picked up a calculator in 10 years, my maths level has dropped dramatically. I recently was working at an after school tutoring centre, and a Year 8 girl asked me something about a Maths problem she had. I just looked at it, and said "Umm, check with one of the other tutors". Maths is definitely NOT like riding a bike - you gotta keep at it.
Affliction
A sense of achievment from the challenge I suppose.
