My question is does anyone know whether there were any beliefs of some form of "mind control" with any of the Pre-Christian European Pagan religions?

The Roman imperial cult, mainly an easter antecedent, was at times able to claim someone was guilty of treason, a capital offense, one that carried the death penalty, if someone refused to worship the emperor. Rome though also had the Pantheon which was dedicated to all the gods, known and unknown. The oracles in the Greek world were at times believed by rulers and their political policy in turn could be guided by this which would affect others. These cannot really be compared to the type of coercion and mind control that can be found today in some religions but that does not necessarily mean it is of modern invention of religion. Pagans did persecute Christians for over 300 years, Jews as well for some time, but this does not prove any 'mind control' was occurring but rather social competition. Blaspheming gods though, even pagan gods, when they were tied into nationalist, ethnic, or tribal organization surely though was not tolerated.
