user posted imageClimate change over the next 20 years could result in a global catastrophe costing millions of lives in wars and natural disasters. A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a 'Siberian' climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world. The document predicts that abrupt climate change could bring the planet to the edge of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and secure dwindling food, water and energy supplies. The threat to global stability vastly eclipses that of terrorism, say the few experts privy to its contents. 'Disruption and conflict will be endemic features of life,' concludes the Pentagon analysis. 'Once again, warfare would define human life.' The findings will prove humiliating to the Bush administration, which has repeatedly denied that climate change even exists. Experts said that they will also make unsettling reading for a President who has insisted national defence is a priority.

The report was commissioned by influential Pentagon defence adviser Andrew Marshall, who has held considerable sway on US military thinking over the past three decades. He was the man behind a sweeping recent review aimed at transforming the American military under Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

CNN just carried the story. It was a watered down version of the story. But they did let one of the co-authors speak and give his point of view. They (CNN) kept saying that they (the pentagon) were going after the "Worst case scenerio" But it's funny that the pentagon is saying that there is a grave concern about global warming, but the current administration says it dosn't exsist. Go figure.

Omg...that whole article is bs. Think about it this way. When you put what in a glass of water what happens? The water rises to the level it would be if the ice cubes melt right? Now think about millions of ice bergs and then the icecaps being out in the ocean. They displace water just like the ice cubes, so the water level won't change nearly as drastically as they are predicting. Sure there might be more flooding and more rainfall and colder temperatures, but it's not going to be nearly as catastrophic as they want you to think.

It's not that the artical is B.S. per se. The whole report is based on a 'what if' theory played by those guys and gals in the funny shaped building.

The Ice cube theory would be valid if you don't take into consideration ground water supplies that are being brought to the surface, it evaporates and now adds to the total moisture content of the air. The underground supply is not being replenished as quickly as it should be. Add to that all the garbage we dump into the air, gabage we dump into the oceans, moving land masses and making artificial land forms from garbage. It is possible. Maybe not in the time frame that they speak of, but it is possible.

<<i fail to see how a climate change will bring nuclear wars???>>

I think that they said somewhere in the report that food and supplies may become harder to find and that people will after time need to fight for them (much later on after this climate change I would think), eventually years later big groups or countries may use the threat of nuclear weapons to secure food and supplies.
I suppose if you were trying to keep limited reasources for your people/family you would need some leverage.

the south pole sits on a land mass. there are literaly hundreds of kilometers of ice that are not displacing any water.
