A rock? its own jettisoned heat shield aeroshell or parachute? An artifact in the image caused by a data dropout or a cosmic ray hit to the camera?

I thing it's very rude of Mars to be giving us the finger like that.

Wow a 2 minute video to show one picture is a bit ridiculous in my opinion, haha.

It is very interesting though. Hopefully there are more to come.

It's most likely and obviously the heatshield.

Because if they were close up it would be obvious that they were nothing out of the ordinary. The fact that they ARE always in the distance should be a big clue that there is nothing unusual going on.

If you start with the question "what is it?" (as this video does) then you clearly don't know what you are looking at. If you don't know what you are looking at you can not claim it is anomalous.

A very silly video employing a silly lack of logic, but there are enough credulous people out there to fail for this sort of thing and claim it is yet more evidence that NASA is covering up alien technology on Mars.

Re-reading my post I hope it is not interrpretted as any kind of attack upon the OP, it certainly is not. I appreciate the use of the phrase, to me this not an actual claim of any anomaly, rather that it is unusual looking.

I doubt that that is the limit of the pheonix's capabilities. If it was aything it would have been identified. the fact that nothing was said leads me to beleive there is nothing to say it wasn't a rock or something. Enhanced pictures don't mean much. Its an educated guess by a computed it could be distorted into an image resulting in thinking its annomolis. Lets see something good from pheonix. Just got there let it work................

maybe we will never know what is was if its part of the heat sheild ,or parachute then all the nasa brains would of had it on one of there pics. Looks like its up to your own dreams from now on?

I guess no matter where the probe lands, there will be a rock close enough to discount as anything and a rock in the distance that looks unlike a rock....

If the probe landed at the rock in question, then there would be an issue about a rock where the probe is now!

I think it is a reflection off of Chuck Norris beard.

Wasn't there another weird photo taken from mars? There's not much to see here, but the other one was a colorful picture with something very weird in it.

its a graphical error, nothing more, altough there does seem to be evidence of image tampering
