If you pay per month you will usually end up paying much more than the computer is worth in the long run.

Yup. pay-per month ones are usually a lot more expensive... i'd just save up and buy one in one payment...

Never buy anything on credit that you can pay cash ... (unless there is no interest, in that case buy on credit and put the cash into a savings bond)

i wouldnt do payments either, like a car, if your making payments on it and something happens, like if it breaks down and you dont have the right warranties ect.., you could be stuck paying for something you cant use.
save your money and pay it off all at once, and spend alittle extra for tech support and warranties.
ive noticed alot of new computers are barley lasting a year before something happens like the hard drive going bad,
or the screen on laptops crapping out.
and for god sakes dont even consider buying a gateway! they have the worst tech & pc support known to man

But if you need to build up your credit, then that would be a way of doing so. most places have a warrenty that covers the time of contract. also a plus to purchase. But in no means dont go to a place that isnt a "computer" store. you can specially have computers designed and built to fit your needs. for around the same price, depending upon store, location, ect. a computer wouldnt be worth buying if you stretched out a long contract. since they go outta date so fast.
what are you going to do the most of with your computer, is a question to keep in mind. then go from there.

look at dell.. they make good computers and their desktops are cheap!!! u can customize it too... look for a intel dual core processor.. that is a necessity now a days.. for smooth running.. and grad a good graphic card too.. ati or nvidia..

I'm sorry, I have to chime in on that one...
I've been in the software industry for 18 years (or more). Dell's business computers are ok since they come with half decent warrentees... their consumer desktops are ok, but you can do better and cheaper just having one built at a local computer store. Their consumer laptops however SUCK. I've had 5 of them in 7 years and the workmanship has been shotty with broken welds, bad cooling (really bad), blown power supplies, and shoddy monitors. I would NOT recommend Dell consumer laptops.
They are cheap... but there's a reason why. The longest I've had a laptop of theirs last is 22 months. After that, they're garbage and the warrentees STINK.
Save your money and buy with cash. A computer isn't so expensive that you need to finance it. The interest rates on those loans can be as high as 17-22%. Pay cash.

Depends on what you're looking for...I built my computer for a little under 200 dollars and it runs like a dream but if your going mainstream, you can use the APP purchase program to trick the HP.com site into giving you a 200 dollar discount on really good computers.

Motherboard is an MSI K9N SLI
Hard drive a 60gb
Ram is 2GB
It has a DVD- R Burner drive
a Nvidia video card
I'll post specific specs later, I'll have to look at it again.
I got all of my parts from frys.com and newegg.com. Great prices. I can create a list of links for supplies if you want specifics?

Don't buy on credit, i remember my first laptop, it cost £1200 off the shelf, by the time i had paid it off, i had actually paid £2000, that was the first time i had ever purchased on credit, and definitely the last!
Only two things in life i believe justify credit, and that is a Mortgage on a house, or a modest loan on a car! People should be able to save for most other things!
