"Dacoit lynched, cop succumbs to heartbreak at macabre sight

A tender-hearted police officer succumbed to heartbreak at the macabre sight as an angry mob lynched a bandit after robbery on a bus at Mograpara under Sonargaon thana on Sunday night.

Police said enraged local people beat to death one of the gang and also gouged out both eyes of the dead, whose identity could not be known.

On information, second officer of Sonargaon thana SI Abdul Hakim went to the spot with his force. He suffered heart attack seeing the deformed body of the dacoit. He died of the cardiac arrest on way to Dhaka.

Sources said a gang of 7/8 robbers, who were traveling on a Comilla-bound bus in the guise of passengers, took control of the bus after stabbing the driver at Madanpur in Bandar thana.

The bandits looted cash, gold and other valuables worth about Tk 5 lakh after stabbing the passengers. Ten passengers were injured in the gang attack.

The dacoits got down from the bus at Mograpara, and when they were getting away with the booties, local people rushed in by hearing a hue and cry and chased them.

"At one stage, local people caught two of them and gave them a good beating, leaving one dead on the spot. They also gouged out both eyes of the dead dacoit," says a spot account of the holdup.

They didn't think much when they were robbing and stabbing people, did they? Maybe the crime rate would fall some if criminals were more afraid of being mobbed and killed by those that they terrorized. Too many people have a "stand by and watch" attitude. . . Of course, in America at least, we're afraid to do anything because we stand too much of a risk of getting in trouble ourselves by intervening. I think its stupid.

That is the job of law enforcement agencies, not of citizens.

But where can you draw the line with that statement? I read an article yesterday about a woman that shot and killed a man that had held her captive and abused her, and she is being sentenced and probably facing jail time because she "shouldn't have killed the man". . .where is the logic in that? She took an opportunity to steal the gun, probably the only chance she would get to be free of the abuse, and shot the man. What else was she supposed to do? Hold the man hostage? Give him the chance to maybe get the gun away from her and torture her even more??

In this case, what were the people to do? Let the criminals run away while they waited for the police to arrive? Allow them to get away and spread crime even more? Who is to say that the police will catch the rest of the men? The article didn't mention anything about what happened to the other robbers. Even when police know the identity of a criminal, it doesn't mean they will catch them quickly if at all. . .and who knows how many more crimes that person will commit in that time. Certainly you could say they could have just "caught" the men and held them until the police arrived. . .but considering the men were armed and obviously dangerous, is it any wonder that the people reacted in the way that they did?

I don't think there's anything wrong with citizens intervening. In some cases it's just instinct. . . and in some of those cases it is a little bit harder than ignoring every basic instinct to call the police.

Well gouging out their eyes and hanging them certainly wasn't the first option that crossed my mind. I'd rather be a victim than a perpetrator, this is not something I would want on my conscience even if it was some what provoked, these vigilantes are guilty of the same mentality they are condemning.

When citizens take it upon themselves to intervene they generally have an act now, ask questions later mentality which presents obvious complications, what if there had been a misidentification etc. That is why there is a legal process in these scenarios to diminish the chances of mistakes being made.
