Full Version: Genetic Manipulation vs. Evolution

I was thinking about genetic engineering/manipulation the other day and a thought occurred to me,it has been stated that certain undesirable genetic "faults" can be fixed on the genetic level in the future. Male pattern baldness is one example that comes to mind. My question is, if we can eradicate this "fault" and others like it, will it cause a problem say....1000 years from now? And how are we to know that these genetic patterns aren't the work of evolution?

Another question came to me as I was typing this, if we can work around evolution ourselves, should we take that path and forge ourselves on the anvil of science, or should we let nature take its course? (sorry to wax poetic grin2.gif )

While this topic can only be speculation, I would be interested in your replies/input.

You raise some interesting points. GE does hold the potential to eradicate many diseases/birth defects, but until we know a hell of a lot more about the actual way cells work we will not be going there yet. Very very few diseases can be linked back to a single gene defect... the most common one being Cystic Fibrosis. Fix the mutation in the gene and you fix the disease. Most conditions have multiple causes or are the result of defects in genes several degrees separated from the end result. Basically we need a lot more basic researc before we can enter the Brave New World
