Doctors in Japan who carried out surgery on a man to remove a tumour had good news and bad news for him.

The good news was that he did not have cancer.

The bad news: The growth that had been causing him pain was in fact a 25-year-old surgical towel.

The patient had been carrying the cloth since 1983, when surgeons left it in him after a minor operation to treat an ulcer, a spokesman for the hospital said.

The man, now 49, went to another hospital in late May after suffering abdominal pain.

When examinations found what was believed to be an eight-centimeter tumour, he underwent the operation to remove it. It was only then that surgeons realized it was a towel.

"The towel was greenish blue although we are not sure about its original colour", the Ashai General Hospital spokesman said, adding it had been crumbled to the size of a softball.

Asahi hospital officials visited the man and apologized, he said,

The former patient had no plans to sue the hospital, which is in talks with him over compensation or other measures, the official said.

Japanese media reports said the man, who was not identified, still had his spleen removed.

I suppose he could have had it worse... it might have been surgical scissors or the like.
still, i expect he's relieved not to have cancer.

I personally find it amazing that there's actually one person out there that's not willing to sue someone for a mistake.

Agreed. I told my dad about my beliefs over the issue of euthanasia and he said, "You know the doctor who did your mom's surgery? He thought that was right, and it wasn't. Now imagine the other doctor's like him who aren't performing their surgeries right being responsible for euthansia." Honestly, I think they need to make becoming a doctor a little more efficient. There are way too many problems with today's surgeries coming out wrong due to mistakes, accidents, and malpractice.

Doctor's are in a "practice" right?? WHY?? Because they are only PRACTICING MEDICINE.. UGH...

Leaving a towel in someone's body is totally inexcusable. I would be so (insert foul language here) angry if that was me!!! ...and just EWWWWWW.
