"A MAN charged with assaulting and robbing three elderly women, one aged 94, in Sydney last month is being investigated in connection with up to 50 similar attacks in the past year, a court has heard.
Police revealed their suspicions when unemployed Surry Hills man Darren Henry Fitzpatrick faced Ryde Local Court yesterday.
Fitzpatrick, 34, appeared briefly before Magistrate Robyn Denes after his arrest by detectives from Strike Force Wintercorn in Epping on Tuesday. Strike Force Wintercorn was formed last month after police in the St George-Sutherland Shire region identified eight attacks in their area on elderly women.
The strike force investigation has since identified 49 attacks where descriptions given by the victims of the offender were similar.
Police opposed bail indicating that Fitzpatrick was a prime suspect in a further 40 unsolved assault and robberies.
He was refused bail to appear before Central Local Court on Tuesday."
