Nuclear war will begin next Thursday, June 12, or sooner, according to the latest prediction of self-proclaimed prophet Yisrayl "Buffalo Bill" Hawkins, the founder of a religious sect in Abilene, Texas.
Lawmakers investigate a former policeman and his doomsday cult.

"It could be turned loose before then," Hawkins told 20/20 for a report to be broadcast tonight. "You're going to see this very soon, really soon," he said.

Hundreds of truck trailers have been loaded with food and water on the group's 44-acre compound, in preparation for the coming war.

Unfortunately for Hawkins, it is not the first time he predicted the outbreak of nuclear war.

Most recently, Hawkins set Sept. 12, 2006 as the beginning of the end.

His followers produced an on-line video with a countdown to doomsday.

In Kenya, hundreds of his followers actually hid in basement bomb shelters and donned gas masks on the date.

They went home in humiliation when there was no war.

Why do these people keep doing this? They're just making laughing stocks of themselves. It's sad really.

There are two things that greatly interest me in such events. The psychology behind both those who find a need to believe in such doomsday planning and those who find a need to deride it. Naturally when one offers an opinion on something it reveals more about themselves than on what they are commenting on.

So someone saying the world will end next week we must prepare is really saying something else about themselves and how they relate to the current climate. Likewise someone who finds a need to ridicule or criticize those doing so are also saying something else about themselves, something deeper, and it is those two things I wish was more translatable. I am more interested in what both of those groups are actually saying about themselves and what they think of the world. In both cases I suspect that both views are related to fear and unease while their expressions act as outlets or valves to cope with those feelings. Clearly those secluding themselves in preparation are taking the more drastic action but I feel there is great and equal importance in both commentaries regardless if one takes action or not. There are many more I suspect who feel something who might be led into a doomsday group yet they do not take that action. There is an underlying foundation that must first be in place.

There might also be other factors at play.

While I do condemn such "doomsday" prophets, I don't think it is entirely fair to rubbish the entire concept. Hinduism has always had sages and sadhoos. They are expected to be our guides in the path of life.

Like many other countries, Hindus have their own calendars. It is not uncommon for eclipses to be given significance. It is well known that eclipses do affect human psychology. Can it not be entirely possible that we do not completely understand their effect on us.

As for healing with tridents is concerned, I would like to put it down to faith healing. Agreed that these days such "miracle healing" has become a thriving business.

As for mental powers, I believe the west does actively involve psychics to solve crimes. Are all of the psychics in the west 100% genuine ;-) I think the same applies here.

When will we see Michael Mann and James Hansen similarly arrested for similarly sowing hysteria among the intelligentsia? Looking forward to it, if the fashion for arresting false prophets spreads beyond the third world....

I would be highly interested in taking part in a greater discussion regarding this but will not be disappointed if none is offered since not many think in such terms. In either case simply defending or deriding either the doomsday cults or those who ridicule them is of no interest to me but rather the mechanics behind both. I encourage others to further this particular topic and any sources based on either psychology or sociology would be greatly appreciated. Also any angles based on the new era of the internet and the information explosion especially 'smart mobs' and how they play into all of this would be quite fascinating in particular.

Some people, seriously, some people...

So in search of the truth they'll believe anything...
