Democracy only extends to who we vote for. When it comes to the important decisions we have to rely on a handful of people to hope they get it right. I'm more in favour of referendums myself.

America has become the worlds police. Sadly enough, we often..impose our beliefs and government system on other countries. Iraq is an example of this. Not every government will be the same, but we are trying to do that. We have invaded, and we have killed...for no reason other than spreading our seed in regions thousands of miles from our homeland. I'm impressed with this video.

As the the subtitle says, the True Crime forum is intended for "discussions relating to criminal mysteries". Despite the title of this thread this is a political discussion and is better suited to the World Events & Current Affairs forum, which is where I am moving it.

I thought the USA was a republic like a constitutional republic or something rather than a democracy.

QUOTE (Wikipedia)
Democracy is a system of government by which political sovereignty is retained by the people and either exercised directly by citizens or through their elected representatives. It is derived from the Greek δημοκρατία ([demokratia] (help·info)), "popular government"[1] which was coined from δήμος (dēmos), "people" and κράτος (kratos), "rule, strength" in the middle of the 5th century BC to denote the political systems then existing in some Greek city-states, notably Athens.[2]

In political theory, democracy describes a small number of related forms of government and also a political philosophy. Even though there is no universally accepted definition of 'democracy',[3] there are two principles that any definition of democracy is required to have. The first principle is that all members of the society have equal access to power and the second that all members enjoy universally recognised freedoms and liberties.[4][5][6]

There are several varieties of democracy, some of which provide better representation and more freedoms for their citizens than others.[7][8] However, if any democracy is not carefully legislated to avoid an uneven distribution of political power with balances such as the separation of powers, then a branch of the system of rule is able to accumulate power in a way that is harmful to democracy itself.[9][10][11] The "majority rule" is often described as a characteristic feature of democracy, but without responsible government it is possible for the rights of a minority to be abused by the "tyranny of the majority". An essential process in representative democracies are competitive elections, that are fair both substantively[12] and procedurally[13]. Furthermore, freedom of political expression, freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential so that citizens are informed and able to vote in their personal interests.[14][15]

Having lived in Latin America for many years and visited many of these places, I deeply appreciated this film. Its content is well known throughout Latin America but will probably come as news to many within the U.S. There was not doubt, from the beginning, of the U.S. role in the overthrow of Chavez in 2002 and that Carmona, who owned the television stations, was a personal pal of the Bushes. And yes, the "little people" have changed the face of Latin America and hopefully wait for the same thing to happen in the United States.

Yeah in any government system the elite rules. In a Democracy or Republic the elite just allow the people more freedom and choices and therefore the people are happy.

Almost like in the matrix where the people are slaves just to a greater degree then whe are now.

We live in a democracy for those fleeting seconds you are stood in the ballot booth about to put your cross on the ticket, The next time you live in a democracy is 7 years later stood in that same ballot booth.

"It was curious to think that the sky was the same for everybody, in Eurasia or Eastasia as well as here. And the people under the sky were also very much the same--everywhere, all over the world, hundreds or thousands of millions of people just like this, people ignorant of one another's existence, held apart by walls of hatred and lies, and yet almost exactly the same--people who had never learned to think but were storing up in their hearts and bellies and muscles the power that would one day overturn the world."
- George Orwell, 1984, Book 1, Chapter 10
