Secret super-copyright treaty MEMO leaked
Posted by Cory Doctorow, June 6, 2008 12:44 AM | permalink
Wikileaks has the full text of a memo concerning the dread Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, a draft treaty that does away with those pesky public trade-negotiations at the United Nations (with participation from citizens' groups and public interest groups) in favor of secret, closed-door meetings where entertainment industry giants get to give marching orders to governments in private.

It's some pretty crazy reading -- among other things, ACTA will outlaw P2P (even when used to share works that are legally available, like my books), and crack down on things like region-free DVD players. All of this is taking place out of the public eye, presumably with the intention of presenting it as a fait accompli just as the ink is drying on the treaty.

Honestly, it's becoming clearer and clearer that the entertainment industry is an existential threat to the idea of free speech, open tools, and an open communications network.

Agreed.

Totally agreed.

The media is utterly criminal. Not only are they a profound threat to the effective functioning of our democracy through their willfull distortion of information, propgandiizing, outright lies and crimes against the american attention span but thei're also trying to literally buy the internet. And not this??? They're dumbing us down every day, spoon feeding us garbage like the Bachelor 34 or Indianna Jones 15 Pyramid of Crap, or worse yet, shoving the personal lives of dysfunctional lunatics in our faces every three seconds (and telling us it matters!).

Edward R. Murrow, one of the last true Americans, comes to mind. When TV was first becoming huge in the US he pioneered unbiased news-broadcasting and warned America thusly:

"This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box. There is a great and perhaps decisive battle to be fought against ignorance, intolerance and indifference. This weapon of television could be useful." -Edward R Murrow

The media must be subverted and destroyed however possible. They are the pusher, the dealer, our addiction and our destruction. God only knows what will come of us all...

It can only go so far before the people overthrow their own government. That's what we have weapons for here in America. Of course it'll take a lot of pushing to get that kind of reaction, this is one step in the wrong direction. Besides that, I will always use P2P, even if illegal. As if the **** I do on P2P isn't illegal already...

while I think most who use p2p are actually stealing the media work of others and there is no justification for it. only slime steal. however ...... the free flow of ideas , the public domain should not be bound. a better way to adhere licensing is needed.

do these organisations expect MILLIONS for a song or movie? Honestly, theres a lot of good work out there that gets no where near that mark. If they stop making movies its their bad, i dont care if i dont see any crappy hollywood movie ever again, there are plenty other good movies that make a decent amount at the box office anyway
