Even among people who regard spiritual life as wishful hocus-pocus, there is a growing sense that humans may not be able to survive without it. It's hard enough getting by in a fang-and-claw world in which killing, thieving and cheating pay such rich dividends. It's harder still when there's no moral cop walking the beat to blow the whistle when things get out of control. Best to have a deity on hand to rein in our worst impulses, bring out our best and, not incidentally, give us a sense that there's someone awake in the cosmic house when the lights go out at night and we find ourselves wondering just why we're here in the first place. If a God or even several gods can do all that, fine. And if we sometimes misuse the idea of our gods—and millenniums of holy wars prove that we do—the benefits of being a spiritual species will surely outweigh the bloodshed.

and further into the piece -

One of those reasons might be that, as the sole species—as far as we know—capable of contemplating its own death, we needed something larger than ourselves to make that knowledge tolerable. "Anticipation of our own demise is the price we pay for a highly developed frontal lobe," says Persinger. "In many ways, [a God experience is] a brilliant adaptation. It's a built-in pacifier."

Most christians say this, the ones I know anyways... they make no bones about the fact they are concerned about death. hello its obvious in the resurrection story as the foundation of christianity....... for me and my personality it was far simpler to make peace with the idea i am gonna die....and move on...

really a child at a certain point addresses this and its rather younger than one might expect( they reach this stage when they are ready ) and if theyt are encourged to work it out out naturally they move forward with no fear of death.....its really a milestone in any kids life..one that should be embraced IMO...but sad to say to many folks who are rearing kids haven't worked this out for themselves, oy vey and then they condition the little ones with the same coping mechanisms...."shrugs"

Stereotypes SS that is not true for all Christians.

Anyways that was a funny video and pokes fun of a few religions. The Scientology part could have been more funny though. I want one of them Islam boxes but I doubt that is the actual sound it makes.

I love the CNNNN team. They're the same guys who did the stunt at the APEC summit in Sydney where they dressed up as Osama bin Laden and a bunch of suicide bombers and tried to get to the hotel where all the dignitaries were staying at (I'm guessing that made it to international news, lol).

Not to mention being the same group who put out one of my favourites, the Brokeback Mountain: Christian Edition video

yes.gif I've been asked a few times by Christians how I cope when people pass away - as if the thought is so horrid that one should embrace a 'nice idea', otherwise the reality is too unbearable for the psyche.
