Judging by the number of threads on them, they are the most commonly seen form of "ghostly" phenomenon.

I've never saw one shaped like human, or what is called "shadow people." I've seen other things in the form of shadows, like bats.

One appeared to me and my boyfriend about 6 different times in one night. I actually moved out of my duplex b/c of that.

Mine always looked like the shape of a man.No hat, no hooded cloack, or robe er anything like that, just a solid black shadow of a man.

I've seen multiple ones, however I see them in color, so I'm guessing they aren't the shadow that people people claim to see. I usually see them in the form of people (or animals) and they tend to be a purple/blue, and I take that as the one's that are just there- either just coexisting or wanting to be noticed.
I have also encountered a demon who was very large and a muddy green (bad stuff if you read colors by aura) and another that was muddy red (even worse) in the SAME place- long story behind those (at least they aren't there anymore).
----
The way I saw it was that I can see the entities, but unless they have some kind of intent, they won't change from the usual blue/purple. If they have an even stronger intent, then I will see more features(unless I'm channeling them, then they'll give me a visual if they want). I have seen full images of entities(ghosts if you want?), but they usually have good reason to show me their form without focusing on them.
I have only one memory of a shadow person, and from what I read here before- he wasn't of the shadow people. It was a black entity, head and body(could not see appendages) and he had red eyes. At this time I used to get scared quite easily by entities I saw(not really at all anymore), and he followed me around my art building until I got to my ceramics studio. I'm guessing he's not a shadow person, but was just a mal-intentioned entity because I sanctioned the room safe through a prayer and he watched from the door until he gave up and left.
I have yet to see a shadow person then I suppose (all that backstory for nothing ><), but I have sensed one before, if that makes sense.

mine was a solid black form. i kept reading some posts last night, and mine sounds more like the "hatman" than a "shadow person"

Shadowas are probably the most elusive of paranormal phenomena. They seem to "know" you're looking for them.

I agree, and for the most part, I have always felt,"at least in my case" that it just tends to watch what a person is doing.

Sentinals and lurkers.
That's why so many are seen (when they are seen) at the extreme far ends of visual range. Not so often closer up.

I've seen shadows in other forms, like bat shapes, different sizes.. never have I seen what is called a "shadow person." I've seen things out of corner of my eye that would fit that description, but I'm not gonna say that's what it is for sure.. just something I see out of corner of my eye.. nothing paranormal about it.. or so I don't think.
