It made me smile to read this article. No wonder some people find it hard to differentiate between fact and fiction when something like this happens.

""Indiana Jones" shows his commitment to real archaeology.

After years of being identified on screen as the legendary archaeologist "Indiana Jones," actor Harrison Ford has won election to the Board of Directors of the Archaeological Institute of America. With his Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull set to hit U.S. movie theaters on May 22, the film star commented on his real world dedication to archaeology, "Knowledge is power, and understanding the past can only help us in dealing with the present and the future." A board of trustees who represent our general membership, the academic community, and our local societies governs the Institute,

Mr. Ford is an apt choice for their board.

Are you saying there was something wrong with me posting the article? I thought it was interesting, maybe that's just me.

No. You stated your view,

I disagree. I explained my basis for doing so.

Doubtless, there was similar discussion within the AIA itself before the choice was made.

I know this might be slightly off topic, but I thought you guys might know.

I haven't seen the movie yet, and I probably won't until it comes out on DVD or on HBO for free lol.

What I want to know though, is the "crystal skull" in the title of the movie referring to the real-life crystal skulls that we keep seeing threads about in UM?

I agree with the conclusion of the OP. It is more likely that instead of giving more publicity to the Indiana Jones franchise, which hardly needs any, a good franchise BTW even if I have yet to see the latest movie, this is more likely the AIA attempting to ride the coat tails of that franchise in order to garnish greater publicity, which is well, a terrible way of doing it, at least at first glance. Once you see the website and the link to 'TV & Movies' it seems like their modus operandi.

But making Mr. Ford a member of the Board of Directors is a far cry from doing movie reviews and simply having a listing of upcoming shows on National Geographic channel and History Channel International. Let us see if they include a scathing review of the recent Indiana Jones movie as they have with a few others on how it lacks reality. Maybe this is simply about getting people to visit their 'Shop' link...

You get HBO for free?

No, the movies crystal skull is not related to the crystal skulls debated about on here.

make him a member of the board?
his latest movie about the crystal skulls was mostly wrong not to mention the fact that the crystal skulls mystery has been exposed as a hoax

Most of the skulls have, not all. Also the movie is fiction; it has nothing to do with the other types of skulls either. Why do people always have to compare a movie with reality? It just goes to show that people are brainwashed by TV and movies. cool.gif

Uh, no. Sorry didn't think that one through did I? blush.gif

Thanks for the clarification, though.

This is a pretty good topic, love Rebels mobile phone Star Trek parallel. I love watching movies that border on reality or futuristic reality or historic mythical history, whatever, they usually have a link to reality. Arnie in Total Recall is a good one. The futuristic scenes become more real in the world of technology every day. And don't tell me for one minute Arnie would have been Governer of California if he hadn't been The Terminator!
I think it's great Harrison Ford is interested in archaeology, why wouldn't he be knowlegable about it, during the making of earlier Indiana Jones movies he would have had to learn certain things. It can only bring more money and attention into the world of archaeology which is imo a good thing.

Pretty fun read. Haha, now I'm picturing the entire Board of Directors trying to handle whips.

I liked movie "They Live" about people who look like we do but are from different planet and it was only possible to recognize them with magical sunglasses.
