First off, behind my house is about 3 miles of woods until you reach a military base that is along the Atlantic Ocean. So last night around 3 am i started to hear loud booms outback, and thought nothing of it thinking it was just somebody out there shooting. But it kept happening and it was to loud to be gun shots so around 3:30am I went outback with my dog to see if i saw anything, (oddly light outside for that time of night) and my dog started to go crazy at the sky. So I started to look threw the trees and I saw this white light that came and go in the sky, thought nothing of it, military is training an shot something in the sky. But there became more and more bright lights that popped in the sky that you could see threw the trees and then disappeared. One of the lights popped up and I saw fly across for a second and disappeared in the sky. It was also a very cloudy night and no stars in the sky. Just thought it was pretty odd event.
A few weeks ago, we had a bonfire. We live out in the boonies, sort of, so its pretty dark and not much evidence of city life. Anyway, we experienced what sounds like what you did, loud booms, not evenly spaced out. We thought it could be fireworks but none of us thought it sounded like it and we have heard them many times before from our house. Plus it went on for what seemed like forever. Above the tree line we would have expected to be able to see the fireworks, or at least some indication of it. Other than the sky being lit up quite bright, we saw no evidence of fireworks. Our neighbor down the street called up and said their house was shaking and that her husband had gone out to find out what it was.
He called back 20 minutes later. It was indeed fireworks for the Pitt River Days that we had forgotten about. They were not quite high enough to come up over the tree line but brightened the sky considerably, and I am thinking that the position they were coming from caused a different sound than usual fireworks displays.
It was eerie for a while and we're still teasing of my neighbor going off looking for the Mother Ship...
