It was April 20, 2003 when i got an email from a friend of mine that lived in Bayonne, NJ and he was telling me of his frightning expiernce. however, it wasnt just him that saw this but hundreds of people as far back as the 1800's reporting of a flying monster in New Jersey, more then likely in the pine barrens region (western NJ).i have also seen something of this Jersey devil on tv. on a show called " scariest places on earth" and heard the screams and seen it on tv. also a couple months afterward, my friend came to visit me and he hears strange things frequently caught it on tape, and believe me those screams are so unreal. frieghtning. but anywayz heres what my friend told me:
I was in my house watching TV, and it was Friday and my dog started barking furiously, and then I heard a crash outside my house in the back where my garbage was. I made my way to the door but before I made it I grabbed a knife in fear of it being like a wild animal or a person. So I turned on my light outside and quickly ran out when I heard a sound like a whoosh in the sky. I looked up to see something with wings look down at me and I ran full blast inside. When I was finally inside the house everyone in the neighborhood (as well as me) said they heard a noise that was bloodcurdling, it sounded like a woman screaming at the top of her lungs times about 10.
It was really dark because I was looking into a moonless sky, even with my light on, but what I did catch a glimpse of was that the monster had a long brown neck with a mouth like either a dog or a horse (I think more of a horse because it was larger than a dog's mouth). Its wings were shaped like a bat's, however it was almost like a mix between a bird's and bat's because the wings were skin. The monster's eyes were blood red, the body of the creature was almost too dark to see but what I did see was that it had a large figure either like a horse or something of great power.
tell me what you think....

Interesting picture; was this something that you took or was it used to reference what you saw? It doesn't quite seem to fit in with the description that you gave as for the creature's mouth to have appeared elongated more than a dog's mouth, whereas this picture gives the impression that the head has a very "long" neck attached to it. LOL Sorry, just looked almost like those pictures of tribal women that have those myriad rings around their necks and makes their necks get really long and stretched out.

That picture is a hoax, I'm sure of that... It's been reported as one on a few websites now... I thought it was a pretty well known hoax... Ah well.
If I find the sites that say that, I'll post it on up.
Also, I'd just like to note that maybe you shouldn't post pictures that aren't really directly related to the story, as it may confuse people. As for the e-mail... very erie indeed. The description deffinately matches that of the Jersey Devil, but how reliable is your source... how well do you know your friend? He wouldn't just be making this up for fun would he?

I have been doing a little research on this story. It seems real to me, and did anyone ever stop to think where the hockey team got their name from?? The New Jersey Devils. It all makes sense doesn't it? I also watched the story on tv, same program with Linda Blair from The Excorsist. I wouldn't discount that it happened to your friend. It was born the 13th child of a woman who deemed it the child of Satan, so I undertand. It eats chickens whole. I imagine the town must live in constant fear..

The Jersey Devil presents an interesting conundrum. Like most paranormal creature sightings it seems able to appear and disappear with amazing alacrity.

I grew up in southern New Jersey (which is also part of the pine barrens), and while I heard plenty of active animals at night, I can't say I ever heard anything I thought was the Jersey Devil. I am very familiar with the legend, though. I don't know if it's been discussed here other than this thread, though I don't think I've seen it...anyway, if anyone is interested I can post the version of it I heard.
One thing about it -- the family the Jersey Devil was supposedly born to was the Leeds family, and there are still many, many Leeds' all around south Jersey. In fact, there were some that lived almost right across the street from me. Nice people, though -- not a forked tongue or hoof in the bunch, lol.

Fascinating. One of the oldest recurring legends in North America. Unique. Anybody on here who isn't already into Weird New Jersey should be.

The Pine Barrens are more in south Jersey than west Jersey. And yeah, the others got the legend of the Jersey Devil down. I've wandered around down in the Barrens and even camped there once... never saw anything strange.

I've lived in South Jersey forever, and there are always stories of someone in the barrens spotting the jersey devil, but never any pictures of him....His story used to be confined to Leed's Point and the Pinelands, but the stories go that he has also been sighted in North Jersey....Huge, wings, horns........In my opinion it's an urban legend that has been around forever....I wouldn't get my hopes up on spotting him........

about 2 years ago, I was getting ready for bed. When all of a sudden I heard the loudest most blood curdling scream/growl/howl (best way to describe it) I have ever heard. It sounded like the whole block where my parents lived would have heard this thing. I went to my parents room and they said "yeah what was that noise??!" I never found out. It just seemed that something that loud and eerie would have been done by a human voice. It was just too loud and sounded like it came from all directions. I'm in long island by the way.

Just because you have never heard the souns before.. please dont chalk it up to the local folklore. What you probably heard was the call of a barn owl, something a littlle mundane than the jersey devil. But the scream, nonethless is an errie sound to hear, especially if you are not unacustomed to such a noise. Follow the link and listen for yourself. You will want to click on typical call.http://www.owlpages.com/owls.php?genus=Tyto&species=albaNow imagine yourself in the dark pine barrens all alone listening to that sound over and over, your imagination will get the best of you. And yes the barn owl resides in New Jersey. Case of the mysterious call solved.

Here I am back again... you know you missed me......... anyways.. I thought id go ahead and offer my two cents on the rest of the jersey devil folklore. I dont believe it is the devil incarnate nor do I belive it is the demon spawn of the devil. Again just my thoughts take them or leave them. I believe that the jersey devil is 4 four things..........
folklore + imagination + owl + crane = jersey devil
Folk lore offers the intriguing story
Owl offers the voice of the creature
The crane the body of the creature
Imagination fills in the gaps
lets see.. by now everyone knows the many different stories of the beast so we can skip that
now lets look at the beastClick to view attachmentCompare it to the Sandhill craneClick to view attachmentNot exactly clones...but take into consderation the creature is mostly seen under dark conditions.. and with the imgaination running wild.. easily mistakable
Add the voice of the monster.. enter the Barn owlhttp://www.owlpages.com/sounds/Tyto-alba-3.mp3and wallah we have a monster
Again just my thoughts. take them or leave themAnd yes both birds are found in NJ
