I'm sure every state has a legend of Mary. I'd like to hear what some of you have heard about the legends of this mysterious woman. I live on Long Island, NY & there are so many different versions. Here's a few that I've heard from our area:
1. There's one that says that she lived with her step-father, who was an aweful man, he would beat her all the time. Mary's only companion was her which her step-father killed just for the fun of it. Heartbroken, Mary hung herself so her spirit is seen walking the area at night looking for her dog.
2. Mary's jealous boyfriend suspected her of cheating so he threw her out of his moving car on Sweet Hollow Rd, she didnt die from being thrown out of the car, she was killed when a passing car ran her over. Her spirit is said to be seen walking down Sweet Hollow Rd.
3. Mary was a witch that was hung by the towns people at a place called Hanging Tree. Her spirit is seen wandering the woods in that area
4. Mary was a resident of the once known Chandler Estate, which burned down with her in it. She is seen walking the area.

There are actually quite a few more variations of it but no matter how much research we've done, we can't find any truth to any of the stories. But I always believed that urban legends stem from some kind of truth. So there has to be a real story about Mary but I don't think we'll ever know what it really is.

How bout' Molly Hatchet - Molly Hatchet is an American Southern rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1974. They are widely known for their hit song "Flirtin' with Disaster" from the album of the same title. The band, founded by Dave Hlubek and Steve Holland, took its name from a legendary Southern prostitute who supposedly mutilated and decapitated her clients.

I was under the impression that the house where Mary Hatchet killed her family eventually was sucked into the ground, and all that remains above ground is the top of the chimney.

i thought mary hatchet killed her family with a hatchet/axe that she got from her dads work [he was a lumberjack] anyway this seems fake to me in watever version u tell it mainly cus her second name is hatchet which seems kind of unlikely for a second name and of course hatchet means axe

There are such things as nicknames given to prisoners or death row inmates. Sometimes the names stem from their crimes, and in ways of serial killers, it could be how or with what they killed someone with.

Mary(or Molly) Hatchet is no different.

I'm sure everyone knows a story of a "Mary" that haunts an area in their town or state. It's really bizarre.
Blind Atrocity
Actually, I don't think Arkansas has one. IF they have, I've missed it completely.
LIGhostChick
Does Arkansas have a similar story... maybe her name isn't Mary but it's the same story?

I would venture to say that's because Mary is a very common female name. If you look hard enough you can find connections between everything. Kinda like the number 23 phenomena. The mind searches out patterns.
