Central America has some of the grossest and most disturbing diseases and parasites I've ever heard of. I give a lot of credit for anyone who can live and thrive in such a place. I sure as hell couldn't, I can't even stand the wimpy spiders in my house.
I had a Professor for an archaeology class I was taking who used to excavate Mayan sites. He had some interesting stories about botflies

I can't stand any form of parasitic creature hehe.

Nasty.
No joke, there is actually a type of parasitic worm which has been known to thrive inside, yes, inside, the human eyeball. Horribly, until the worms are removed in surgery the victim can actually feel them squriming inside his or her eye.
And there's always the urban legend about the girl who comes back from africa with a pulsating sore which drives her insane until she rips her flesh open and out pour hundreds of spiders.

Just because you've heard about it, it doesn't make it real - thats the whole point of urban legends.
Anyone got any evidence (ew!) of other worm in the eye or spider babies legends?

That's exactly what my professor said he had to do. I don't know if it was a botfly in this instance, but he claims some sort of parasite had burrowed in the scalp of one of his grad students and he had to cut it out with a knife. Reminds me of those beetles in
The Mummy.

visceral larval migrans is when you get a parasite that is usually not a human parasite, and instead of reaching adult stage, they migrate in larval stage through out your body, esp to the liver and eyes. I remember my Wildlife Biology professor scaring the crap out of me with a story about raccoon feces and eye worms......

Botflies. ew. I hate them. nasty nasty. For some reason they disturb me the most out of all the parasites. I saw a program on tv about different kinds of parasites. . .one was about a man that had a little worm like thing in his eye. He was talking about how he could see it wiggling across his eye and stuff.

I always wanted to travel until I saw that show. Now my travel list is considerably shorter.
I remember in middle school we had to watch this disturbing video on tapeworms in home-ec. It showed one thing where a girl didn't eat for a few days and then put an orange slice (or something like that) between her front two teeth and the worm crawled out. Possibly one of the most yucky things I've ever been forced to watch.
Then my ninth grade biology teacher had the great idea to remind us that just because we cook something, doesn't make parasites/worms disappear. We still eat them, only they're cooked. I could have lived the rest of my life without having to hear that. Not like we don't already KNOW it. . .but hearing someone else talking about it just makes it all the more disgusting.

You are welcome - -this is one of those things that really freaks me out!! Apparently raccoon poo can have the agg cysts in it, and they are incredibly tough, so if you had one on your hand, and then used a blow torch to sterilize your hand (assuming your flesh could withstand that) the egg cyst would still survive. OR so my professor told me. He said the only safe way to handle raccoon droppings was thick rubber gloves that then get thrown away very carefully.
All I know is every time I get my eyes checked I am thrilled when they don't see any worms in there

I had seen this a while back and it has since bothered me. I think of reports I have read stating that an average human will eat about eight spiders a year while they sleep..things like that. We have no Bot flies in our area, but I do think of things crawling in my ear and living or laying eggs. We have this type of spider in my house that I have noticed this year that covers itself in web, like a house. I havent a clue why *and if anyone can tell me, that would be much appreciated

* , and they crawl at an awkward angle..like sideways. I worry it will nest itself in my ear. Ahh, I hate stories like this lol!!

One type of worm can thrive for years within your brain, often a few of them come of pus/blood filled cracks in your head but die once outside. There is always that story of the girl who got a tadpole in her brain (

How?) which grew into a frog and, well, hilarity ensues.
