Full Version: How many Heavens

I thought it would be interesting to try and come up with different versions of heaven/hell from the different religious or spiritual beliefs. Valhalla for example, is an interesting Nordic version of heaven, and the Chinese have various hells to "choose" from. This isn't about what you think heaven or hell will be like, just what different religions claim. Nor do I care about the validity of any particular religious views, I just thought that this could be a learning experience. grin2.gif

Agnosticism:

We currently lack any possible way to have knowledge towards an afterlife and whether or not a heaven and/or a hell exist.

According to Quran, there are Seven Heavens. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) ascended the Seven Heavens with Arch Angel Gabriel. During this Miraj (Ascension) he met various other Prophets, then ascended "above" the Seven Heavens, beyond the upper most boundary (Sidra Tree) which none may pass, to the Presence of Allah where he received the command for the Five daily ritual prayers (Salat).

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: "As Salatu Miraj ul-Mu-min" - "The Prayer is the Ascension of the Believer"

There are also Seven Hells, according to Quran.

Thanks Darklight, do you have any descriptions of the Seven Heavens?

In Judaism there are seven universes/worlds.....this is the lowest of them, so this is the closest to hell that we would get.

The descriptions of the Heavenly realms are mostly symbolic. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught that in Paradise, there will be no excrement from the nose and mouth, and no emptying of the bladder and bowls.

A Sufi Sheikh was asked by a pupil "what are the fruits of Paradise like" and the Sheikh picked up an apple and gave it to him, the pupil said "but this is just a normal/worldly apple", "Yes" said the Sheikh, "but the fruits of Paradise will never decay, and there is no waste from their consumption".

It seems that in Paradise, there is absolutely no entropy of any kind, but rather all things are in a state of constant rejuvenation. The aspect of Jihad (struggle/strife) is non-existent in the Heavenly realms.

And Allah Knows Best!!!

We do not even know what heaven and hell truly are, if they're universes or what.

As stated in Bee Eff's feed.

Mormon's believe in 1 heaven with three kingdoms. 1 hell which very few people will actually go to.

Valhalla (Old Norse Valhöll, "Hall of the Slain") is Odin's hall in Norse mythology, located in the Asgardian realm of Gladsheim and is the home for those slain gloriously in battle (known as Einherjar) who are welcomed by Bragi and escorted to Valhalla by the valkyries. (The "höll" part of Valhöll means 'hall'.) The term 'Valhalla' has entered popular usage for an ideal, heaven-like destiny.

The main gate of Valhalla is called Valgrind, which is described in Grímnismál as a "sacred gate", behind which are the "holy doors" and "there are few who can tell the manner by which it is locked".

The hall itself has 540 doors, so wide that 800 warriors could walk through side-by-side. It is said that there is room enough for all those chosen. Here, every day, the slain warriors who will assist Odin in Ragnarök, the gods' final conflict with the giants, arm themselves for battle and ride forth by the thousands to engage in combat on the plains of Asgard. Those who die in the fighting will be brought back to life. At night, they return to Valhalla to feast on the boar Sæhrímnir and drink intoxicating drink. Those who do not get to Valhalla go to the home of the dead (Hel), a place beneath the underworld (Niflheim), or one of various other places. Those who are lost at sea, for example, are taken to Ægir's hall at the bottom of the sea or loch.

In addition to the Valkyries and the Einherjar, a rooster named Gullinkambi lived there.

Here is a little info on Valhalla from wiki Valhalla

Apparently it only applies to those who die gloriously in battle though.
