Ok, so yesterday my sister and I stopped by the movie store to rent some movies and I couldn't find any that I actually wanted to sit through! (We ended up getting the Boogeyman, good movie) Anyways, I need some help here so what are some good scary movies that are worth spending my time on? Thanks!
Anukis
I enjoyed watching The Shining, in fact its one of my fav movies, its not that terrifying, but it has some brilliant acting by Jack Nicholson.
The latest Amytville Horror is a good horror flick, so the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Ring.
zrina11
Grudge and Grudge 2. Freaky! Oh and my all time favorite, Pet cemetery. That one is old but really good.
Rosewin
The Eye (both the Asian and American remake).

FireMoon
Night/Curse of the Demon.. black and white made in 1957... The special efx are a bit crud, it was 57 after all, but still a damn scary movie in terms of the atmosphere it creates.

Legend of Hell House 1973? Roddy Macdowell a scientific take on the haunting of a house plot... Pretty much invented many of the stock clichés of modern Horror.

House on haunted Hill.. The remake, stylish and actually quite scary in places..
AkamaruFoxHound
well, its an old movie but good, The Golem
zrina11
Remakes are hardly ever as good as the originals. I just hope they never make remake of Birds. That's another good movie.
kreestar
The last house on the left- not incredibly scary but definitely disturbing.
raoulduke666
I'm a big horror nut so here it goes...The Exorcist 1/3, The Legend of Hell House, Night of the Living Dead (1989 Remake), The Thing, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original).
AkamaruFoxHound
hmm...

The Corpse Grinders, The Embalmer, The Devil's Nightmare, House by the cemetery, the devil commands, atom age vampire, frankenstein versus the creature from blood cove, blood tide, werewolf in a girl's dormitory (its ok), house on haunted hill (original), nosferatu, white zombie, the blob, castle of the living dead...

that's some classics I know of, hope it helps

OMG!!! The Asian horror. No doubt. Nothing even compares..

rosenrot
If you want something different, try the original Japanese version of the The Ring; the American version was scarier, but the Japanese version has a completely different feel to it. And The Grudge was good, too.
zrina11
Oh and let's not forget Candyman.
googiboo
The movie that has disturbed me the most is the Grudge. That movie is plain not normal. House of 1000 corpses is really good, but only cause i like the bad guys lol. Dawn of the dead, 28 days later and 28 weeks later are my favorite zombie movies. God knows there are more that are good. But dont come to mind atm
ArtemisArcheress
I absolutely loved the new (its new for us in the UK!) Stephen King film - The Mist. Its very much a thriller too.
What i liked about it most is that its not only focused on the blood and the gore, and has a very important message about humanity and its flaws.
Plus it has some real nasty scenes in it too! grin2.gif
And the end....blimey....its cruel, sooo cruel...

I loved it!

A tale of two sisters is good too, its a japanese film - one that hasnt been re-made!
hocus
yeah asian horrors are good for scares. the grudge put me off going up in my loft for a while lol.
grudge 1&2
the exorcist
the omen trilogy
jacobs ladder
the exorcism of emily rose
the ring
the sixth sense
jeepers creepers 1&2
kreestar
I'd definitely agree on The Exorcist and The Ring. They are two of the only movies that have ever scared me. The Ring isn't scary now that I've watched it so many times, but that first time..whoa (especially since it was one of the first of the J-horror remakes and sparked so many more).
I also think The Descent is worth a look, and if no one said it, The Blair Witch Project.
M.M.J.R
Thanks guys these are really helping! I'll check some of out the next time I'm out the vid store. I've seen some of the ones that you suggested (like the ring and the grudge) so thanks please keepc giving me suggestions.

The Changeling

I don't care for gore. I can't stand the "BOO" factor. Making me jump isn't the same as scaring me.

I loved the Changeling. Not much gore. TONS of creepiness. Still makes me bring my feet off the floor and turn on the lights.

The Changeling

The Exorcist, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Shinning, IT, Halloween, Night of the Living Dead, The Evil Dead... The Ring, The Grudge etc all those Japanese horror movies didn't scare me one bit, in fact they made me so angry 'cause they were so bad & boring. Real snooze fest.
Pluto-x
If your into cult classics check out Phantasm Phantasm

Rosewin
Ya Shankpin J-Horror and Asian Horror is the best. Also A Tale of Two Sisters is from South Korea (I have owned the DVD for sometime but have yet to watch it lol.)
Elite
heres one of THE freakiest and creepiest films ive ever seen [most films by david lynch are this good]
heres the link mulholland drive
~Onyx~
An older movie, but one I highly recommend, is The Thing(With Kurt Russell). Then, of course, you have The Exorcist. Those are the only two movies I can ever actually being scared by.
Pol_Pot_will_killyou
Timur Bakmambetov's Daywatch and Nightwatch.
High Tension.
They're a weird mix of horror/action.

Brahmana
Depends on the STYLE of horror movie you like. I myself am more into sort of mood films rather than just make you jump and gore fests. I'd suggest

Nosferatu The Vampyre (German movie, remake of the silent. EXCELLENT.)

Bram Stoker's Dracula (the one with Gary Oldman)

Mary Shelly's Frankenstein (with kenneth bragnah)

The Legend of Hell House (as someone else noted; that movie is REALLY good)

Hellraiser 1 and 2 (these are the only modern monster movies that I like)

The Lord of Illusions (Another Clive Barker movie, rather disturbing)

.....and also check out some of the old Hammer pictures, ones that have Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, and or Christopher Lee. Movies like The Raven, Fall of the House of Usher.....most of their films are REALLY good until you get to the more recent ones from the mid to late 70s, like the satanic brides of dracula kind of nonsense. But others of theirs are sooo good.
TheLivingDead
Any asian horror movie, especially The Ring and Premonition. Definitely check out Diary of the Dead and Sickhouse. Sickhouse can move along a little slow at times, but the ending will absolutely blow you away. The Orphange is great, not real scary, but the ending made everyone cry! Silent Hill is also awesome. Oh and if you love Stephen King, definitely watch Misery. If you want a 'scary' comedy movie, watch Shaun of the Dead. 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Dawn of the Dead (2004) are some of the best zombie movies.

Ok I think I'm done for now. wacko.gif Most of the movies I own are horror movies, I love love love them! If you need anymore help, I have at least 20 more horror movie titles to give to you!

Yeah. I think the sounds in that movie really freaked me out too and that hardly ever happens. yes.gif
Thebighead
Shutter from 2004 not the remake and rec 2007 , scary ****
Barron
Okay here goes, The Exorcist (although a bit dated now, but at the time WOW!), The Entity (still some scary bits of note), Halloween (1 still grinds you down), Texas Chainsaw (original) and Rosemary's Baby to name but a few unsure.gif .

I am not much into slice and dice movies, but the thing about horror films is that they are relevant to the time / place that you watch them, and also depend on who you are keeping company with while watching. Not to mention if you are under the influence of the demon drink at the time grin2.gif

good viewing thumbsup.gif
Nessieman23
The Grudge Series (or Ju-On, whatever you prefer)
Halloween Series (not H20 though, because it goes all fantasy-horror, not just slasher)
Texas Chainsaw Remake or the Original
PSYCHO (1 and 2, stay away from the remake)
The Birds
Jaws
The Sadist (like a pre-TCM exploitation)
Friday the 13th One
Nightmare on Elm Street One
Uzumaki (J-Horror film, means Spiral)
When A Stranger Calls (Remake and Original)
Donnie Darko
Jacobs' Ladder (really really weird, it's like Silent Hill, watch it if you like SH)
Audition (J-Horror)
Suicide Club (J-Horror Again)
Cujo
The Shining
Ringu or The Ring, whatever you prefer
Silent Hill
The Omen
Signs (not so much horror, but it's freaky)
Kairo (Pulse)
Shutter
Children of the Corn
Who Can Kill A Child? (Or hurt a child, something like that)
The Orphanage

Yep, thats all I can remember now. I'll put more in Later, maybe.

Come to think of it, most of these movies can be found on Watch Movies. Sorry if that can be considered advertising other sites, UM.
Cyaneyed
^The Orphanage is a brilliant film.

To the OP: First of all, how old are you (not asking to be weird, but it will help me in choosing [or not choosing] certain films for you), and secondly, what do you class as horror? Thrills, chills, gore, shocks, jumps, or what? I mean personally I have never found a film 'scary' (and doubt it is possible) but some things make me cringe, I can connect on an emotional level with films, but fear never seems to be touched. I personally find that 'human thrillers' beat out anything like (generally) generic horror films 99 times out of 100. Case in point, Jacob's Ladder and Midnight Express.
metalmouth
Anything by Stephen King, the original Salems Lot Is pretty scary also The Amityville Horror (any version is great).

true but some of the eastern european stuff is freaky too.

the mist was freaky oh and the orphanage was great

it also depends on your horror are you gore horror or mind horror. Like you can get movies that are just blood fests and others that make you think and think and then you start seeing things that are not there and you freak yourself out

Gore - Texas chain saw, Saw 1 to infinity and hostel etc

Mind - Alot of the asian flicks eg the eye the grudge etc, sixth sense to a point, mothman prophercies
Atheist God
Hellraiser series
Night of the Living Dead classic and 1990 version
Dawn of the Dead classic and remake
Day of the Dead classic
Halloween classic and remake
A Nightmare on Elm Street series
Friday the 13th series
Texas Chainsaw Massacre series and remake
Evil Dead trilogy
Saw series
Psycho
Dead Alive aka Brain Dead (goriest of all time)

These should keep you going for a while.

For the most part I do not like horor films, just because they tend to bore me, however IMHO the best are the remake of "the thing", "The exorsist", "the changelling"," the shining",actually liked the made for tv shining as well, and more recently "30 days of night" Was actually a pretty decent horror movie."30 days of night was actually one of the better vampire movies I have seen.
seax
One of the best vampyre movies I have ever seen is an old one. Nosferatu, a German silent film. This movie portrays the vampyre as according to legend. No hollywood whistles and bells.

best regards,

Amazing film. First time I saw it the ending gave me chills, (not in a scary way, you've seen it so you will know what I mean), and literally chills when I thought about the film later on. One of very few King stories to successfully move to the screen (and be good).

I agree, Sam Jackson is awesome as "The manager" A room from which there is no escape, You can check in but you cannot leave ((Hotel California)) I love Steven King, he is my favorite author, I like how he always is in his films as a cameo

I like Rose Red to, its older but well written, its one that gets better when you research it and watch it more than once, its based on actual haunting that are well documented.
jasonsdoorn
i know what you did last summer.

Red Rose it a total rip off of "Legend of Hell House". I don't have a clue how King got away with that.

[Rec] - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1038988/

7.8/10 on imdb is great for a horror flick.
This is probably the best horror movie I have seen in a long time.
KayEl
The problems with horror movies is that once you've seen it and knows what is going to happened, it doesn't have the same impact the second time around.
But the original black and white Night of the Living Dead still packs a wallop. I had nightmares after watching that movie!

Other than that, some other good scarey movies:

Halloween
Alien
The Exorcist
The Omen
The Shining

I loved that movie. A classic ghost story!!

I have just recently seen this one Asian horror called "Ekusute" or Hair extensions.. This horror had everything. I was surprised at how great this one actually was..

Two other Asian originals I can't push enough, they're fantastic!
The shutter (Thailand)
and Gin Gwai (The eye- Chinese version)

-Cannibal holocaust (ugh)

Phase 3
The movie the Gate best horror movie of all time.
ShadowsAndDust
Urban legends is a pretty good horror movie, I know what you did last summer as well, but after watching all of them it got quite old.
