I remember a classic PC adventure game called Manhunter. I am writing a story based on the game. It's kinda like a fanfic.
Aliens, who call themselves The Benefactors conquers the Earth swiftly. They never show themselves and send robotic proxies to do works with humans. Some humans, who are given faster reflexes and super strength, are chosen to be the law enforcers of The Benefactors. They are called Manhunters. Their main job is to quell any resistance against the Benefactors.
The main character is one of the most ruthless Manhunters. He is abusive, misogynistic and violent. In the Act I we see him mercilessly asskicking a small band of resistance people. Even The Benefactors don't like him because he makes everyone else look bad. He closely work with robotic proxies, who look like levitating Egyptian coffins with faces and everything. His superior, who is a tall, blond guy, doesn't like his ruthless behavior. Well, The Benefactors want to show good impressions on humans, curing cancers, feeding the starving third worlds, curing STDs, and doing away with pollutions by giving humans better power source. But some people don't want to be obedient to The Benefactors.
The main character have a short term relationship with a woman who works for a publicity department for The Benefactors. The main character dumps her after one night, and the woman is shocked. (note: she looks just like Natalie Portman.) The main character's superior is incensed by this for some unknown reason. The main character just behaves like a total dick. And he kicks more asses.
At one point, the main character requests surveillance records of LA county Zoo. At home he plays the footages and search for shots with families. He finds some footages with families strolling in the Zoo. He finds a boy telling his mom and dad how much he loves them. The main character replays the footage over and over again, sitting on the couch and emptying the bottle of vodka.
Eventually, the main character is convinced that The Benefactors are up to a very sinister goal. He realizes that what he has been doing was wrong. He decides to help a resistance group secretly.
When the main character comes back to his apartment, the woman is waiting for him in the living room. The guy is shocked. The woman confronts him. She notices that there is not a single childhood pictures of him. He explains about his past. His mother was a total vapid b**** and left his father and him for some French billionaire who had some Asian fetish. His father commited suicide and the only escape for the main character was to joining the Army. He became a Ranger and he got through a community college during his service. Soon after his separation, the invasion started and he eventually joins Manhunters. He eventually discovered that his mother died of cocaine overdose in a large castle in France.
The main character tells the girl that he will treat women just like his mother treated him. And he b****es about how much he hates household chore and raising children. He tells her that having a family is the last thing he ever wants to do.
In the Act III, the main character joins the resistance and raids a government building. Well, I didn't really lay down the whole detail in this part. But this is what eventually happens. The main character is captured by other Manthunters, along with the resistance members.
Here's the major twist. The main character has been lied by the resistance. In fact, the resistance was led by a parasitic aliens who were at war with The Benefactors and they wanted to use humans as food and hosts. In fact, The Benefactors took over Earth to protect humans from other alien invasion. It is suggested in the middle of stories that all the stories about alien abductions and encounters stopped surfacing after the conquest by The Benefactors. Why? Because the Benefactors barred any other aliens from entering the Earth.
The main character realized that he made a horrible mistake. He is taken to a Benefactor ship hovering over Los Angeles. Well, nobody has 'seen' how Benefactors really look like.
The main character is dragged to some kind of execution chamber. There's this electric chair-like device. And, oddly, there are people surrounding the auditorium. People like you and me, but only more handsome and youthful. The main character is faced by his former superior (the tall, blond guy). And the superior tell him.
"We are the benefactors."
The main character is shocked to discover that The Benefactors are biologically identical to humans. Actually, quite a few of them have been living among humans as neighbors. The reason why The Benefactors never showed their true identity was that humans will never fully obey those who look just like them. The main character looks up the crowd. He finds the girl. The girl is in fact a princess of The Benefactors... He begs and screams. "I don't wanna die! I made a mistake! Don't kill me! Don't kill me! I am sorry! I am so sorry! I am sorry for dumping you after one night! I'll be a good boy for you! Don't kill me! Please!" And the girl looks at him with a smile.
The main character is tied up on the chair. And the switch is on. The guy screams. Screams like nobody else. The horrifying scream fills the room. The Benefactors looks at him with an amused look.
Soon, the guy looks completely lifeless on the chair. The blond guy whispers to the princess "He is all yours."
20 months later...
We see someone cooking. We only see his hands. He is skillful. Turns out that he is the dick who got zapped at the chair. Suddenly we hear a baby crying. He runs to the baby's room and takes care of the baby boy. He is waiting for his guest at dinner. Soon, the door of the apartment opens and the princess, the blonde superior and his wife walk in. The main character cheerfully greets them and kissed the princess. They have a dinner together, all prepared by the main character. The princess feeds the baby. Yes, they are married. Turns out that the chair was the device to change people's personalities completely. They all have wine at the veranda. The blond guy asks the main character if he wants to come back to the job. The main character politely declines and says that he loves being a stay-at-home dad, cooking and doing household chores. He asks the blond when the Benefactors will reveal themselves to humans.
The princess leans on his shoulder and tells him "Very soon, honey. Very soon."
