How is The Day After Tomorrow paranormal?
Nine years is beyond your time frame, but the best paranormal movie in a generation was The Sixth Sense.

A certain part of The Eye was alright, before it spiralled into a world of ridiculous (Some parts made me laugh a bit). The concepts were there, but the execution ><;;;;
I haven't seen the original yet, but I'm looking forward to (I forgot the title, I came accross it on a whim)
Another movie that comes to mind is El Orfanato(The Orphanage). The movie dealt with spirits playing games, and a mystery that needs solving. While some of it may seem far fetched, there's a scene with a medium and paranormal investigators. Also, there's a really creepy mask that's worth a look, haha. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit (Made by the the people who produced El Laberinto del fauno aka Pan's Labyrinth).
Those 2 are the only movies coming to mind, atm.

I still love
Ghost Story Four successful elderly gentlemen, members of the Chowder Society, share a gruesome, 50-year old secret. When one of Edward Wanderley's twin sons dies in a bizarre accident, the group begins to see a pattern of frightening events developing
a movie based on a novel by Peter Straubb ( Jaws) the book was great.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ__dDCOHeoThe ChanglingIt was the perfect family vacation for composer John Russell and his family when a freak automobile accident claims the lives of his wife and daughter. Consumed by grief, John, at the request of friends, rents an old turn of the century house. Mammoth in size, the house seems all the room that John needs to write music and reflect. He does not realize that he is not alone in the house.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSx5zepTvo4Phantasmhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qQMaVRG0Ow* I really liked the Uninvited and my old stand by just for creepiness and camp - From Beyond.

* I really liked the Uninvited
Ghost Story
The Changling
If it's the Ray Milland version of the The Univited, then definitely! Since you mentioned The Changeling and Ghost Story, you may want to check out The Woman in Black (1989), available on Amazon dot com.

Ghost story was filmed in part in Lake Helen FL at the cemetery and other locations. I grew up there only a quarter mile from that cemetery.
The changling was also pretty cool. Those are old though good.
Those trailers looked alright. Mirrors and Knowing looked the best though.

The Messenger. It basically destroyed the Pang Bros' reputation. Oh well. Another flash in the pan. Then again, a really good horror/supernatural film is almost impossible to do. Anything good is impossible to do. Most genre films nowadays fall flat and buried. So, what does one do? Lower one's expectation? We all know the answer to that one, don't we?
Truth is: I would be very embarrassed, indeed, to make a list of supernatural films "that have come out in the past 5 years!"

Pang brother's Messengers that bad??
The best paranormal movies are by far Asian. Ours (U.S) sucks, to put it slightly.
Gin Gwai (The Eye) is awesome..
"The shutter" (i think it's Thailand) it's pretty darn good.

In terms of corny, flying/levitating ghosties, special effects? I think I'll pass. The thing with American film makers: They're too embarrassed to do the same things that have been done in the golden age of 70s. The film community in the US is very small and reputation is always on the line. Asians can afford to be copycats. The 80s tried to recapture the glory days, but alas, most are tired. 90s and to now, it's all about money and cheesy laughs. The art in horror is gone in the American soil and elsewhere, at least so far. Most just go for the glossy look and cheap gore and loud scare tactics.
Only if you don't mind reading subtitles and miss out on the total cinematic experience, perhaps the Asian menu is passable, if nothing else, laughable. I would rather read a book, actually. So, I totally disagree that "the best paranormal movies are by far Asian," especially with their bad scripts and dialog.
"Shutter" is an okay, another Ringu-like film, and I'm not saying that the Ringu chick is that original either. After Linda Blair in Exorcist, everything else is an anti-climax.

I am with Shanky cause she knows what she is talking about as usual and The Messengers was not that bad. They Eye one and two are good and Pang brothers directed as well. Even the American remake was not that bad. I also liked The Covenant for the coolness factor. Lady in the Water was awesome but not everyone will like the slow pace of beauty unfolding.

And I don't know what I'm talking about. Right. Sounds like you're just settling for less, just like most people in this century. But, "that's okay." No accounting for taste, however.

Havent you seen Strange Wilderness? The movie I'll forever remember as having a scene in which a group of people puke into a shark's mouth. Just see the movie, if you dare. It does involve hunting Bigfoot.
But no, seriously...that was a "comedy." I totally like that idea you said though. That has potential to be an awesome movie. I hope something along those lines is taken seriously and produced, because I'd love to check it out.

Most of the stuff you see these days are just crazy. In my opinion, the best paranormal movies would have to be Dragonfly and What Lies Beneath
