oops, can a mod edit my title to read "Part of Mars...Was Soaking Wet" thanks!

Opportunity Rover Finds Strong Evidence Meridiani Planum Was Wet

QUOTE
Scientists have concluded the part of Mars that NASA's Opportunity rover is exploring was soaking wet in the past.

Evidence the rover found in a rock outcrop led scientists to the conclusion. Clues from the rocks' composition, such as the presence of sulfates, and the rocks' physical appearance, such as niches where crystals grew, helped make the case for a watery history.

"Liquid water once flowed through these rocks. It changed their texture, and it changed their chemistry," said Dr. Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., principal investigator for the science instruments on Opportunity and its twin, Spirit. "We've been able to read the tell-tale clues the water left behind, giving us confidence in that conclusion."

Dr. James Garvin, lead scientist for Mars and lunar exploration at NASA Headquarters, Washington, said, "NASA launched the Mars Exploration Rover mission specifically to check whether at least one part of Mars ever had a persistently wet environment that could possibly have been hospitable to life. Today we have strong evidence for an exciting answer: Yes." ...

Woo Hoo

Still reading myself

was it necessary to remove the was for the title?
lol here i was thinking that the rover found free flowing water
Nethius
no no, i asked them to add "was" to the title, so people wouldnt think that!

finished reading... bout timewe got a few answers, not as many as i hoped! looking forward to reading more as it comes!!!

From what I have been reading on the
web and in the world media there could
be far more to this story than we have
been told so far.

Data is flowing in faster than they can
deal with at this point.

I have always believed that Mars was
once a living planet, with oceans, lakes,
rivers, plants and even a vast eco
system including life in many forms.

I also believe that Mars will once again
come to life.... everything is there,
one day man will terra-form Mars.

We will not see this in our lifetimes
but many generations in the future
Mars will be a very "Earth Like" world
again.

We now have confirmation that Mars did
indeed have liquid water, and was a world
much more like Earth once than many are
willing yet to believe.

What I believe happened is a massive
impact of an asteroid eons ago that set
the course of global cooling on Mars,
the ultimate outcome was that all the
water froze, everything died!

But all that needs to be done now is to
warm Mars!... How?.. You ask!

It's simple... find a way through future
modern technology that can produce enough
greenhouse gas on Mars that it will begin
to warm. In time the frozen water under
the surface will melt, and the water will
flow, the planet will come to life "again"

One day in the distant future Mars could
be very Earth like, and in that time
humans here on Earth will have the
optiion to live on Mars or vacation there!

The really cool part is the gravity is
so much less there, you could run faster,
jump higher, just about everything that
involves getting off your butt would be
much more easy on Mars. tongue.gif

These are really amazing times we live
in now!

But a few thousand years from now, it will
be far far beyond amazing!

If you can buy land on Mars now! future
generations of your blood line will thank
you! wink2.gif

Well if the ice froze then where is it? and I really dont think an asteroid would do that. Thats what they thought about the dinosaurs to. I really just dont know. Its an unsolved mystery....

The water is frozen under the surface
dust in many places.

It has been frozen for many hundreds of
thousands of years.

Mars became cold and very dry, and has
for thousands of years had dust storms
on a super massive scale!

In our own lifetime these dust storms
have been recorded, sometimes the planet
looks like a dust cloud, for weeks at a
time you cannot see the surface of Mars
because of the dust clouds and sand storms.

You do not need a degree to figure out
how the ice was covered and is under the
surface now do you?

Trust me I know what I am talking about
here! thumbsup.gif

I would not be surprised if we one day have the technology to repair mars . It would actually solve a lot of problems with overpopulation .

well in the last ice age on earth, the poles grew allot larger, while the rest of the earth experienced massive droughts

You can forget about Mars being repopulated as a new Earth. It lost its magnetic field. No magnetic field=No protection from sun's radiation. And once the Earth loses its magnetic field, Which it is already starting to, will it become like wasteland Mars.

As depressing as that thought is he's right. Unless someone comes up with a better way to stop the effects of radiation on an entire planet then Mars will remain how it is.

Athenian, you probably just described the reason Mars died out.
A planet without it's magnetic field is exposed not only to radiation, but to solar winds as well. Solar winds ionize the atmosphere and take with it a part of the atmosphere. The same thing happens to Titan when it is out of Saturn's magnetic field. Like a rock in the desert, the atmosphere of Mars just decayed after eons of solar winds taking with them part of the atmosphere. After almost all the atmosphere was blown out to space, only the heavy gases - like CO2, stayed as thin atmosphere to the once wet planet. After that, Mars had no thick atmosphere to keep it's surface warm enough for water to flow. The water froze into eternal ice, covering with dust after tens of millions of years in the harsh weather caused by the lack of any significant atmosphere. If there were any life forms on Mars (and I'm starting to believe there were), they probably died long ago and their remains are covered with tons of sand, dust etc.

Actually regarding earth losing it's magnetic field. That's not entirely true. I saw a show on the Discovery, that explained the reason, why our magentic field is weakening. See in however many years, the magnetic field changes from north to south, they have found a way to prove this. When this change is occuring, the field gets weaker. Now I'm not saying that we will never loose our magnetic field. I'm just simply trying to explain why currently our magnetic field is getting weaker. Pretty soon, what used to be North will now be south. Hopefully it won't get so weak to the point, where the radiation for humans will be too much. You can read about it more on these links.
